I have a bamboo rod with a south bend automatic reel that belonged to my dad and i'm guessing it's 50 or 60 years old. About 5 or 6 years ago I had it refinished and the guides rewrapped. About a month after that I got it out to clean it up and noticed that the tip has twisted. Does anyone know where I can get this fixed or another tip for the rod. I'm not sure of the make or anything else about the rod. I live in Acworth and I'm new to Georgia so I'll tell you I'm not very familure with where things are:)

I would love to get this rod repaired so I can use it now that I living here after 18 years in TX and no place to use it.

Sorry to hear your tip got buggered up. If you cannot find someone local to build you a new tip (and that is probably what you will need), then I can suggest a guy up in New York that does great work and is very reasonable in his pricing. His name is Mike Longuil (Bamboo Mike) and here is a link to his website: http://mysite.verizon.net/bamboo.mike/index.html

Good luck and keep us posted on how things work out.

Buck,
Thanks for the reply. I'll keep it handy in case I can't find someone local to fix it for me. Once fixed I hope to learn all over how to use it. It's been close to 20 yrs since I fly fished.

Ratlird,

I too live in the Acworth area, so maybe we can hook up and I can take a look at the rod first hand. Send me a Private Message (PM) if you are interested. As far as finding someone local, we do have a few NGTO members who build bamboo rods, but I am not aware of any bamboo guys that do repair work on old production rods. Hopefully someone else will chime in with some suggestions in this area.

BTW, Bamboo Mike specializes in repairing old production bamboo rods like South Bend, H-I, etc and I know he has quite a collection of spare tips to choose from. Actually having a new tip built from scratch can be quite expensive, so you definitely want to find an existing tip that matches your rod's taper and Mike can definitely help you out in this department. He is a great guy to do business with and usually turns things around really quick.

Ratlird, Question; is the entire tip of the rod (bamboo) tristed or is it just the tip top guide that is twisted? If it's just the tip top guide it's an easy fix. If it's the entire tip that's a different story. If you want to look at some of the repairs I've done in the past you can search some of the posts here in the bamboo forum or search my home page. BTW I live in Acworth, near Kellog creek.
Mark

P.S. Since Buck Henry didn't remember that I do repairs I'm going to have to pay him with quarters for the rod he's selling me.;)

Whoops, sorry Mark! Hey Ratlird, Kayakerguy does repair work and is darn good at it to! Why I remember once he took an old Leonard rod that had been run through a wood chipper by a ticked off spouse of an avid boo fisherman. When Mark was done, you could hardly tell where that scarf joint was! :)

PS: Bob, sent you an email, feel free to give me a call anytime.

PSS: hey Mark, none of them Canadian quarters, you hear!
