I just got in from my three-week trip to Yellowstone country. Stayed in the backcountry most of the time. The first week was hot (as in the weather). The streams were low and most were closed from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. as a result. Only one thing to do....go high. We hiked up into the Beartooths for some good brookie and cutthroat fishing. Special thanks to Ronnie Wright of Beartooth Plateau Outfitters for pointing us in the right direction.
We camped and fished above the tree line....had to walk through a snow field to get down to the lake!
A week later, the Park had cooled some and got much needed rain. We did manage some cutts in the early mornings using terrestrials.
We spent a day floating the South Fork of the Snake with Henry's Fork Angler's. Caught lots of fat cutts and brown trout! We also spent an evening and morning getting humbled on the Henry's Fork. Tough stream it is.
We saw all the usual Yellowstone stuff as well as the unusual.

That first picture says it all!! Great Pictures, especially the ones of the cutties feeding. Thanks for the report!!
Drifter,
So, how cold was the temp at night at that high elevation campsite?
Very nice slide show.
Who went? I recognize a couple folks but it looks like 2nd generation coming on there.

I just got back from a trip to YNP a couple weeks ago. We had a blast. Nice shots. We didn't do any alpine lake fishing, strickly streams. There's so much fishing out there. Those brookies were gorgeous!
thanks for sharing your trip, and stirring it all up again!

Thanks for the comments.
EG....my son and two other dad/son combinations were there with me during the first week. They flew home on the 28th and I was met by Frank and Edwin and one of Edwin's college buddies. It was a great trip even under the adverse weather conditions.
Temps above treeline hovered in the mid to high 40s at night. Daytime temps were in the low 80s. Perfect weather with the occasional high winds and t-storm in the afternoon. Your 2003 geology lesson came back to me as I saw Beartooth Butte and Pilot Mountain. We have discovered another good alternative to the Park. Too much water, and so little tiime!
Time to start planning next summers AK foray.

BTW...no TSA drama. I saw folks with various sized rod tubes, some were aluminum, some plastic and some cardboard. All were carried on board the aircraft w/o problems. I carried my reels on as well.

Hello Drifter, Your slide show was great. The photos are beautiful as are the Beartooths. You can't beat those mountain pools for brookies, we miss it. Such beautiful country, glad you had such a great time and thanks for the memories of 10 summers in that area. Linda:)
