This pattern is derived from L.J.DeCuir's book "Southeastern Flies".
The Red A**ed Pheasant Tail Wet
This fly has worked well for me on the Chatooga as a dropper.

Hook: Mustad 3906 10-16
Thread: Black 70 Der
Tag: Built up red or fire orange thread or red dubbing (Made from egg yarn)
Note: When you build up the thread, leave the tag end hanging over the rear of the hook, when thread ball is the right size, bring the tag end over towards the eye and tie down. Trim, half hitch or whip finish, then cover with head cement. If using dubbing just use the black tying thread. Now is the time to tie in your black tying thread.
Underbody: Tying thread or for the cigar shape use floss. Unwaxed dental floss works fine.
Tail: Optional / A few Pheasant tail fibers tied short
Rib: Fine gold or copper wire
Body: Pheasant tail fibers
Hackle: Grizzly hen hackles/partridge/english woodcock

Top Fly-red thread tag with cigar shaped body with woodcock hackle
Middle Fly-fire orange tag with built up straight body with woodcock hackle
Bottom Fly-red dubbing with built up straight body with woodcock hackle

That's a great looking fly. I'm not sure I understand how you tie in the red part. Oh well, back to the bench.

Start your red/fire orange thread near the rear of the hook, do not cut off the excess, let it hang out back. Build up a ball of thread and then bring the excess over the top of the ball and tie it down in front of the ball. This will keep the thread ball from unraveling back over the hook bend.
Hope this makes better sense.

Chuck,

Some really nice looking flies !

I love how the fly database is growing with flies for our area.....now we just need a lot of rain to keep our water ways productive.

Thanks for sharing. The recipes and pictures are really great for us still green to tying.

I'm pretty sure I got the Woodcock at the Charlotte fly fishing show several years ago. Just do a web search and I'm sure you will find suppliers. Or you could go out and try and shoot one of those "timberdoodles".;)

Chuck I have to admit I am looking forward to digging out my tying bench once again here in a couple of weeks when I am finished with school. Your recent creations have really inspired me. Got to start getting ready for winter nymphing.

cheers,
