Pattern Info:
Hook: Any 1 0r 2 XL nymph hook (I used a size 12)
Bead: Optional (I used a black bead)
Tail: Pheasant
Body: Pheasant
Rib: Gold Wire
Thorax: Peacock or Dubbing (I used Peacock Dubbing)
Wing Case: Turkey or Thin Skin with Krystal Flash over it (I used Thin Skin)
Legs: Black Sili Legs
Instructions:
1) Place bead on hook and place in vise.
2) Tie on in and wrap towards the rear of the hook.
3) Palce a few pheasant tail fibers in and secure for the tail.
4) Tie in your gold wire and let it hang off towards the tail.
5)Tie in a couple of pheasant tail fibers, by the tips, and secure them toward the rear of the hook.
6) Start to wrap the fibers towards the eye of the hook. Secure them down around the first 1/3 of the hook. Clip off the remaining butts.
7) Wrap your gold wire over the pheasant tail body and bind down. Clip or work off extra wire.
8) Tie in a doubled strand of pear Krystal Flash, let it hang off the back towards the rear. Cut off extra K.F.
9) Tie in your Thin Skin or Turkey on top of the K.F. strands. Cut off extra.
10) Place a rubber leg on each side and secure them with a few tight wraps.
11) Tie in your peacock or dub your thorax.
12) Pull the thin skin or turkey over the thorax and secure behind the beadhead. Clip off extra as close as you can... Watch the thread though...
13)Pull your K.F. strands over the wing case and secure them down as well. Clip of the extra... Once again be careful not to cut the thread.
14) Whip finish and add some fly cement or other substitute. Cut off remaining thread. And you are down.
About the fly:
The PT nymph has been around for a long time. And it catches a lot of fish... I think the rubber legs add a little extra to the fly. Making it look like more of a meal. I fished this down on the Hooch Saturday afternoon and the fish loved it... And not just the stockers, I caught just as many wild browns on it as rainbows. Try using different sizes to imitate various bugs, including mayflies and stoneflies in larger sizes. I like fishing them under an indicator as part of a nymph dropper rig. But they work great as a dropper off a dry fly as well. Just play around with it... There is something about Pheasant Tail fibers that trout just can't get enough of...
Hope yall enjoy it...
