1. Attach thread at eye and lay a base back to over where the barb is or would be.
2. Cut a strip of the yellow craft foam so that it is about 2mm X 2mm and approx. 4 inches long. Gently pull the foam through your fingers to compress and elongate the foam. This can be a little tricky at first, but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. Cut the foam to a point and attach to the rear of the hook, tying the point down as you wrap forward.
3. Advance the thread to about 1/3 to 1/4 hook length behind the eye. Prior to wrapping the body, apply head cement to the thread wraps and then quickly wrap the body to the tie off point. Tie off and trim the excess. The segmentation seen in the photo is the glue lines.
4. Cut a triangle shaped piece of tan foam for the underwing. Make it about 4mm wide at the widest point and about 1 inchlong or slightly longer. (I made a cutter out of brass stock in a teardrop shape tomake these) Tie in the small point of the triangle (with the wide end extending over the eye, so that when the foam is folded back, the end of the underwing will be approx. at the end of the body.
5. Wrap the thread to the eye, binding down the foam as you go. Wrap the thread back to where you first tied in the underwing. Fold the underwing back over towards the rear of the hook and tie down.
6. Cut, clean and stack elk hair for the overwing. The amount of hair used for the overwing should be approx. 1 1/2 to 2 times the diameter of the hook eye. Use the twist over method. (Twist the hair 180 deg and where the hair twists that is the diameter) Tie in the elk hair, trim at an angle, put head cement into the ends of the hair fibers and bind down, forming a base for the hackle.
7. Select a proper sized hackle, prepare, tie in and wrap.(Close palmered,so the underwrap shows) Tie off hackle, trim excess, whip finish and add head cement.

This pattern can be tied in many color combos, black, tan orange, etc.
If you add a tail of elk, palmer a hackle rib over the body and make the underwing elk and the overwing foam you will have tied the FOAMULATOR.

I've tried using foam for bodies, but I think I tie them in too tight... They always end up sinking... Go figure, I'm probably the only person who ties with foam and the fly ends up sinking... Any tips??

Very nice tie, I might have to give this one a try... I'm betting those blue line fish would love this pattern.

Appreciate it Chuck...
