Murray's Hellgammite --- Originator--Harry Murray
This pattern was originally designed for Smallmouth. I have fished this pattern for trout with success in the smaller sizes (#8-10).
Hook: Mustad 9672 or TMC 5262 #4-10 (Being the chea, er, thrifty person that I am, I use Eagle Claw 214's slightly modified)
Thread: Black
Body: Black Chenille, size to hook (see tying instructions)
Extended Body: Black Ostrich Herl
Ribbing: Soft dark blue dun rooster or black saddle hackle (I counterwrap ribbing with either black ultra wire or tying thread.)
Pinchers: Black rubber

Tying Instructions: For #6 Hook
Hook in vice-cover entire hook shank with tying thread-cover middle 3/4 of hook with wire (hook diameter in size)-secure by wrapping over wire with thread and applying head cement
Select Ostrich herl, with thick hairlike side filaments (approx 20 for #6)-break off weak tips-tie in herl approx. 2X hook shank length-tie down butts on top of hook shank for 2/3 of it's length-trim excess butts
Tie in saddle hackle by tip over the bend of the hook-tie in black chenille (size of chenille proportion to hook, but should be fairly fat) tie in counterwrap-advance thread to hook eye and apply enough wraps to form a flat foundation for the pincers
About 1/8 inch behind the eye, tie in a folded 2 inch piece of medium rubber-lock in place and figure 8 so they stick out forward in line with the hook shank and spread about 90 degrees apart-cut to 3/4 inch length
Wind chenille forward and tie off 1/4 inch behind eye-cut off excess chenille-palmer hackle forward in about 5 evenly spaced spirals, tie off, trim excess-counterwrap with wire or thread, tie off, trim excess
Form a thread head and whip finish behind the rubber pincers-add head cement.

Great instructions as always. Makes a dandy Flint River Shoal Bass Fly too.
