One of my most productive attractor patterns this past spring and summer. It produced really well on shallower water. Another quick tie and great beginner dry fly.

Hook: dry fly size 12-16
Thread:8/0 sulfur yellow
Tail: Squirrel tail
Hackle: Grizzly and ginger
Body: Superfine sulfur yellow dubbing
Steps:
Start thread and run the length of the hook and finish at the bend
Catch a nuisance squirrel or search neighborhood for roadkill.
Sequester tail
Tie in Squirrel tail guard hairs.
Select one grizzly hackle and one ginger hackle of appropriate size.
Tie in hackles by the stem at the bend of the hook.
Dub body of fly and wrap shank leaving room for a head.
Palmer hackles one at a time and tie each one in.
Tie a neat head and whip finish
Trim fly and add head cement.
That's it! Easier than a wooly booger. Add a dropper (a soft hackle no doubt) and hang on.

ok 3 days in and still no squirrel. our bus did hit one over in Grizz's neighborhood yesterday but it was gone by the time i got back over to claim the tail, it was gone (alot of free running dogs around there) im thinking about trying a box trap. i used to catch them all the time back when i lived in hampton but there really aren't that many by our house (not since all the acorns dropped) any advice guys:confused:
Hang up a bird feeder and fill it full of sunflower seeds. Once they figure out there is free food, they can't seem to resist them and will do some pretty amazing stunts to get at it. Then pop them in the head with a pellet gun.

I was already looking forward to squirrel season, now it's gonna be that much sweeter.:D The good thing is we have so many squirrels in our yard, but there is 10 times more in the woods!

Make a rabit box(despite the name they will catch squirrels), set out a bird feeder, and when the squirrels start coming to the feeder fairly often put out the box with seeds in it. Paint the box to look like Christmas decorations so MAYBE they won't know what you are doing.

Just curious, if you happen to catch one in a box trap, what are you gonna do with it? A squirrel ain't no rabbit. Iff'n you stick your hand down in a box to pull out a squirrel, you're gonna pull back a bunch of bloody fingers.:yikes:

Sometimes you have to improvise, and make use of the materials you have. If limb rat isn't available, take a long, hard look at the colors and textures of the fur of the free running dogs. They took your limb rat, they owe you a little something in return. Fair is fair.

Pomeranian would be more suitable for emergers. For the original pattern, Chocolate Lab should be a close substitute.

You sound like you have done this before.:nervs:

You of can substitute most canine varieties here. Heinz 57 while be most versatile. If you choose to go with Lab, try some of softer hairs along the neck and from behind the ear. Most of the spaniel mixes will also work, for that matter, just about any of the water dogs would likely be an excellent choice.
As far as hunting a tree rat, I prefer to use this caliber P275/65-18

interesting choice gatorbyte,
as for me, i would rig up a .177 pellet gun with fiber optic scope. when they are on the ground, easy one shot one kill. in the tree, shotgun are always fun:)

This gal I once knew lived in the dorm over at Berry College (Berry school for the cool). Squirrels were so bad that if they left the dorm window open, the varmints would come into the room and steal chips off of the plate they were eating off of. Well one day she had had about enough of that. She tossed some chips out the window onto the ground and pretty soon sure enough here comes ole bushy tail. She then takes aim with a slingshot and plugs that sucker with a steel ball, then another and another. Over a few weeks time she thinned out the squirrel population over there. It got so bad the campus police were riding by every couple of days picking up the carcasses.
