Thanks for posting Mr. Chuck, how do you tie hackle beard style?

To tie hackle beard style, you simply take a hackle feather and strip off a bundle of hackle fibers, then mount them under the hook. They are tied on under the hook rather than being wound around the hook.

Ok, thanks Chuck. I had to find a substitute for the pheasant tippet, I used duck quill. Will that work?

Sam,
If you want to tie the fly to follow the classic recipe, then you have to use the ingredients listed or approved subsitutes. This is usually the way that I tie these "Classic" flies and streamers.
But if you are tying the fly to fish with, anything goes. Most of the trout that I have talked to, said that they did not know the difference between Golden Pheasant tippet and yellow duck quill.:D Duck quill will be stiffer and thicker than pheasant tippet, so it will not have the same action in the water. Who knows, maybe it will work as good or even better than the original.
Have fun when you tie, experiment, and don't be afraid to think outside the box.

That is art.

...and Saranac isn't too bad a beer either.
