I got an early christmas present from cabela's today, a tube fly adapter for my vice. It is secured in the vise's jaws and the shaft adjusts to hold the tube snug. Luckily it came with some plastic tubes and connector tubes so I don't have wait till my order of tubes comes in to start tyin'.
Tube: plastic tubing cut to length
Thread: orange 6/0
Underbody: Adhesive lead sheet folded in half and cut to shape
Body: Mylar tubing
Back: white zonker strip
Eyes: adhesive eyes
Gills: red fabric paint

Note: After you tie in the zonker in the rear coat the body in epoxy. Wait till the epoxy gets tacky and then pull the zonker over the back and tie off. This cements the hide of the zonker to the back of the fly.

Very Nice Conner

I have read several articles about tube flies and for sure they can be very effective. I believe there were several write ups in Florida Sportsman the past several years.

Probably a really stupid question but do you thread this over a hook after finishing? Looking at the pic I do not see a hook.

Also, is the tie off at the head epoxied, or is there a bead there?

Thanks, really great job

Jeff

Whoops I did read where you used epoxy on the body..........

The head is tying thread coated in epoxy, and the hook is inserted into the vinyl tube on the end of the fly(after you thread the tippett thru the tube ant tie it to your hook). I guess the idea is that the vinyl tube holds the hook secure enough that it won't spin but loose enough to slip out or flex and give the fish less leverage to work out the hook. Now If I can just find a fish with a big enough mouth to eat that hoss fly I'll be in business.

I would guess that Striper on the Hooch or Lake Lanier/Allatoona would tear em up.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks
