The Bead Head Flashback Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph tied Wiggle Style
What a mouthful!
This is just a basic GRHE etc. tied in 2 parts and then joined together.
For the rear section I use Mustad 37361 #8 (50 for approx. $2.50 at Wal-Mart) These can easily be bent at the eye to make a turned down eye and on the shank to get the right length. Be very CAREFUL when cutting off the point and later the shank.
I make the rear section about 2/3 the entire length of the nymph. This is the tail and abdomen. The head, thorax, etc. is tied on a curved scud hook.
Tie the rear section first and then join it to the front hook with a loop of Mono, thread, wire etc. I use kevlar thread, colored with permanent markers. Then proceed to tie the rest of the nymph, as you normally would.

This is a style of tying and just about any nymph can be tied this way. Below is Buck's wired Stone.

Come spring, the spots might see something that looks like this only a bit larger ;)

Nice flies Chuck. I'm going to try it.

I'm guessing you just tie in the mono beneath the upper body of the fly before tying the body itself, right? On top? On the sides? What works better?

Tie it in on top, as I believe this will give you the best action.

Great ties. James buice wrote a great how-to in American Angler recently regarding articulated streamers. I guess it can work for nymphs too.

Chuck, I'm curious as to why you chose to eliminate the rear hook instead of the front one? I could be wrong, but it seems like you would get more hook ups with it in the rear, since fish tend to bite the back of a fly, and it would keep you from loosing the materials on the rear hook after successive fish have gnawed on it a few times. (Just speculation)

Loopdawg, et al.
Most of the nymphs that I have seen tied wiggle style are tied cutting off the rear hook. i.e. Senyo's wiggle nymphs from Orvis. You also have to realize that on both of the examples shown, the front hook is a #18, so I don't think that hook-ups would be a problem. As far as the losing of materials off the rear of the rear hook, if you will notice there is a part of the hook shank angled down that will keep the materials on the hook. (Shows up best on the Wired Stone) BTW I've also tied and used articulated streamers and have (when required) cut off the rear hook. Just the way I do things.
If you use the rear hook for hooking purposes, the front hook and rear hook connection will have to be really secure. Otherwise it could pull out when fighting a fish.
Fish bite the rear of the fly??
