i was reading a pattern book this afternoon and came across the pattern for someguy's name black stone. i thought it wa as a cool looking pattern and tweaked it to my mind a good bit

(hey i actually took a good picture this time :o )
picture is one with some rubber legs to add some more meat:D

hook: size 8 2xlong mustad streamer hook
underbody: a good bit of lead (id say at least 25 wraps)
thread: black 8/0
tail: black goose biots- spliced with concave side pointing out
rib: fine silver wire
body/thorax: #7 black hares dubbin
shellback: molted turkey feather segment
rubber legs: black spinner bait skirt
head: built up thread
(thats a long list:rolleyes: )

instructions
1. fix hook in vice and wrap lead in mid shank. build up where you want the thorax to be.
2. tie in thread just behind lead wraps and then wrap and secure lead with thread. wrap thread back to bend
3. tie in goose biots spliced with concave side out
4. tie in silver wire
5. put on black hares dubbing a few segments at a time to make it more manageable stop just before big build up of lead
6.tie in turkey feather slip in know as well
(rubber leg step: tie in rubber legs now if you are going to put them in)
7. build up a good thorax with black dubbing just past lead build up.
8. wrap your hanging silver wire foreward making a good segmented body ( i feel wire adds a little extra flash and attraction) tie off and clip excess
9.pull turkey slip foreward and tie off and clip.
10. build up a good thread head. whip finish and head cement

wow that was a mouthful. at least its a good pic:cool:

please feel free to post any suggestions you guys may have

Very nice stone fly imitation Landon. You might try making the thorax a little wider. You are getting real good with the vise,:) keep up the good work.

I agree, those look good, but i would try to beef them up a bit, stones are usualy big from what ive seen folks ty up. Also - the long streamer hooks, good or bad? i bet if you bent them up a bit like a bendback hook, or circle hook, they would look even more natural.

Landon,
Good looking flies. I also agree that the thorax should be bigger. An easy way to do this is to wrap a double layer of lead in the thorax area and then very gently flatten this area. That way you are adding weight, (dredge the bottom) and also adding a larger (wider) thorax.
I also agree that by bending those long hooks in some way you will be adding "motion" to those flies.
Keep up the good work, and your photos are getting better also.

Nice job. You are tying up some really nice stuff.

I'll take a dozen in size 14 and 16.

These guys have been buzzing around lately and I bet those nymphs will work very nicely.

I really like the one with rubber legs, really nice looking fly. I was thinking of bending the hook the other way. But it looks kind of cool... I only thing I could think of is that it might pop out easier...

You've come along way in the past month or so... (When you are old enough that is;) )

I agree GBB, I might bend it other way for better hook set, but you never know. Let us know what you discover after trying it out on the water.

After you are done with GB's order I will take a dozen of the rubber legged ones :D .

Nice tie Landon, keep up the good work !
