Who out there has fished Jack's River? I went up there yesterday for the first time only to realize that I'd spend the majority of my day driving up winding and narrow dirt roads and hiking on frozen ground...it was pretty cool though. After what seemed like an hour-long hike back in the woods, I finally found the river. The water was low and access was difficult. After about an hour of trying to cast frozen line (I couldn't keep ice off of my line or out of the eyes on the rod) I decided to make it a day for hiking instead of fishing as I enjoyed another hour-long hike back to the Jeep. I didn't find any fish but I did have a good time on my first trip to the mountains of North Georgia. I would like to hear about the experiences that other people have had up there.

Not sure if you realized this or not, but the Jacks River is a seasonal fishery and is closed from Nov. 1st to the last Saturday in March.

When in season it is a tough place to fish as the water is crystal clear and the fish are very spooky. The Jacks and the Connie are exceptionally beautiful places though and landing a fish is an added bonus to a trip there.

Jacks an Conasauga are my two favorite stretches of water in GA I do believe. What trail were you at Sunday?

Thanks for that info, I was not aware that Jack's was closed this time of year. The book I have says that it is open year-round. I certainly would not have fished there is I knew I would be in violation of the regulations.

I'm not exactly sure where I was, but I believe I accessed the river vai the Jack's River Trail. I drove up the mountain and took a right at a split in the road, then drove about four miles to a parking spot where a few trails split off in different directions.

So are there any fish in that area?

yes there are...jacks is a tough fishery though during season though...the times i was in there, the water was as clear as it could be with low water and it seemed like the fish felt you walking anywhere near the river and went into hiding...have caught a few though.
Beautiful country though.

I fished it a couple of years ago. We came in on the Beech Bottom trail side. As I remember, the fishing was really tough, I did manage to bring one Rainbow and a couple of Browns to hand all in the 8-10 inch size. I spent most of the day casting everything I owned to a 17 inch Brown hiding behind a boulder. Be careful if you go back up there, Jacks River is known for its abundance of Copperheads.

It's a good fishery, but watch out for those brown signs at the beginning of all trails leading into the Jacks that say "Seaonal Trout Stream" on them. They can bite with an expensive nip.
