I got a chance to hit Smith Creek yesterday for about an hour in the evening, right before dark. The rest of the gang was with me, dad did not bring his rod, seeing that he had just got home from a 2 week business trip. I think my brother and sister would rather walk with them then fish. So I got the whole river to myself as there were no other cars in the lot.

I decided, since I didn’t have much time, to just work my way from the bridge to the *** (like you can do that in an hour... impossible for me). At the bridge I got my bearings and caught 1 lil 13 incher. I worked my way up stream and only managed 2 others. One was a good 16 inches. The other was not more than 14, but jumped like a mad man, at least 10 times in a rather small run. I hooked at least a dozen or more fish, but just could not keep em' on the line... at the end of one pool I hooked something that was at least 18 maybe 20 inches, he came up, rolled and fell into the current, taking him down stream and breaking me off. You know the feeling that you have been out of practice for a while? Well this was just a trip to confirm that, I do believe.

The water was high from the rain earlier, but it made the fish less picky I suppose. I am guessing that the rain we saw on the way back last night will make the river even higher and that the cold front coming through will put them towards the bottom. The main producer was Steve Hudson’s “sparkle bodied emerger.” I only had one of these in my box, it served me well, until I broke it off on the big 18-20 incher. I also fished a GRHE with a size 18 brassie off the back, I tied this on about 10 minuets before we had to leave, I had plenty of strikes, but non-brought to hand with it.

Sorry no pics.. I forgot the camera rushing out the door.

I'm glad the fly worked well for you! That's a good one for DH almost everywhere -- it'll be great on the Hooch in a week or three when the caddis really get cranked up too!

Best,

Steve
