Alright ladies and gents, my family is trying to figure out where to go on vacation in MAY and we are trying to make a final decision today. So, my question is, where would YOU go if it were a family vacation to a warm Carribbean/BVI/Bahamas-type location that has a few good restaurants and shops but is not "touristy" and has good populations of bonefish and tarpon should the opportunity avail itself to sneaking away for some fishing????
Any advice?

Might be worth checking out the Turks & Caicos islands...

My wife and I went to Ambergris Caye in Belize last July for 8 days. The food is excellent(hard to beat 2 lobster for $8), the locals are very nice and helpful, definitely not "touristy". There are a few shops in San Pedro which have local hand made goods but certainly not the "straw markets" of the Bahamas. The fishing is more than excellent. I was up every morning at 4:05 to chase bonefish on the flats. There are miles of wadeable flats on the island and I would just walk the shore looking for tails. The mangroves behind the island have small tarpon, the large flats between Ambergris Caye and the mainland have opportunity for larger tarpon if they are there in May. Permit are also a very real possibility. There are also plenty of family activities as well. Diving - largest Barrier reef outside of AU. Mayan ruins, cave tubing, Snorkeling with nurse sharks and giant sting rays, catamaran trips, etc, etc. PM me if you would like more info.

Flt straight into Abacos out of Ft. Lauderdale. Then take the Ferry/Water taxi over to Marsh Harbour. You will see bonefish everywhere. I was there 2 ThanksGivings ago. I had a gag grouper come out of a hole when throwing to a bone, and bam. It was like seeing a bass nail it. You can rent boats for the week, you cna take them instead of the water taxi to Marsh harbor. Then you can go big tarpon, permit, snook fishing as well all in the bays, and tribs.
Abacos or Eleuthera on Harbour Island. Harbour Island is kinda the only spot on Eleuthra for decent lodging and food, fishing not as good.
Beaches, snorkling, flats fishing, deep sea trolling, site casting, anyone would lobe it.
Yeah Mon.
