This bass fly was tied as a submittal to Bassasaures Rex's 2008 Bass Bug fly swap. This pattern was developed by Ward Bean and is featured in the Spring 2008 edition of Fly Tyer magazine.
Hook: 4x long streamer hook (I used Eagle Claw 215a-6 available at Wally World - 96 cents for a pack of 10)
Thread: 6/0 denier thread in black
Weight: .025" lead wraps
Tail: Marabou and crystal flash in color of choice
Body: Pearl Estaz in color of choice
Hackle: Red saddle hackle
Mount hook and wrap a thread base. Wrap in sufficient lead, but leave enough space at the front of the hook for the hackle face and head finish wraps
Tie in marabou tail and add some crystal flash for color
Tie in a 6 or so inch long piece of estaz and wrap forward and tie off
Use your scissors to trim a tapered body
Tie in a red saddle hackle feather at the front of the estaz and wrap to form the "red face". Tie off excess hackle and whip finish the head of the fly
