It doesn't get more natural than this...
Name: Pellet Fly, aka Dough Ball
Originator: Some desperate redneck (unknown)
Recipe: Deer Hair, Mustad Size 12 Egg hook. Spin and pack the deer hair onto the hook 3 or 4 times and trim to size/shape.
Tie a few up and take a newbie fishing!

You are right, it could be fished subsurface as well. I tied this up for a specific river where the fish are heavily fed with floating pellets.

Alright,
Gonna give me secret away since I don't use these anymore. When trout hang near a feeder, they often like a floater and it has to float just right.
My best pellet pattern is tied with a specific type of foam. Now that baseball season is in, go to Wal-Mart and get and one of the regular sized, soft, baseballs. These are made with a soft, cellular foam that is the exact color of the tan trout pellets. Cut to size and tie on...they are indestructible and will last as long as your thread.
A brown permanent marker will allow you to match the dark brown pellets.
Good luck!
