As far as I can tell, the 'classic' Serendipity is tied with the wing clipped short and is tied to imitate a midge emerger. By leaving the wing longer, I think you and up with a decent egg laying (ovipositing) caddis pattern.

To date, this is the only trout fly I have tied where I got a strike on my very first cast. I missed him, but got one a few casts later.

The body of this fly should ride vertically below the surface, with the wing and head floating above.

Ingredients:
Hook: Gamakatsu C15-BV vertical-eye barbless, sz 16

Egg sac: Uni 3/0, chartreuse
Thread: Uni 6/0, tan
Rib: Uni 6/0, black
Wing & head: stacked and spun deer hair
Body coating: SHHN

Recipe:
1. Create the egg sac by making a thread bump with the chartreuse thread.
2. Attach tan thread and tie off chartreuse with tan thread
3. Tie in black thread just in fromt of the egg sac
4. Build an even body with the tan thread. the body should taper to a single layer of thread just in front of the bend in the middle of the hook
5. Rib the body with the black thread
6. Cut, clean, and stack a small clump of natural deer hair
7. Position the hair so that the tips are even with the hook bend
8. Tie in the hair, letting some slip down the sides and around to the bottom. Don't let it spin.
9. Bring the thread forward through the butts
10. Using a hair packer, push the hair away from the eye and whip finish
11. Trim the hair flush on the bottom of the fly
12. Trim the head to follow the general taper of the wing
13. Apply a light coat of nail polish (SHHN) to the body
