View Full Version : July Photo Contest

Let's see how this goes. Here's the rules:
1. Submissions have to be in by the last day of the month
2. A poll to determine the winner will be the first week of the subsequent month.
3. No "photoshop" additions like extra images, but you can do color, level, contrast, etc. type adjustments
4. 2 categories:
A: Point and Shoot
B: SLR or large format
The July Contest is a open to all photos on a Fishing theme. This could include tackle, flies, fish, anglers, scenery, etc. The photos must be taken between June 28 and the July 31, 2008.
So there it is. Sweet and simple. Now let's see what we can get.
you can post them right here in this thread however you'd like. I generally use Photobucket.com and use the IMG code. I use the "large 640 x 480" setting so it fits in well with message boards. Of course you can post them however you like.
Gator,
Glad to see you putting this together. A while back we talked about setting up a photography section and this may be a great time to do that. What do you all think, should we have a separate section for photography?
Gatorbyte

I think it would be a good idea to have a separate section. I've seen other boards do it and it works well.

OK...
So I'll be in Wyoming (and away from internet access) from 7/27 through 8/4. Will I have to take my contest-winning photo only after 7/31 to enter in the August contest and just not enter anything I take from 7/27 through 7/31?
Just curious...

I think there should be a set of clearly defined rules, if we are to have a contest. Photos should be submitted no later than 12 (midnight) on the last day of the month in order to be considered for that months contest. The winner should receive more than bragging rights. Perhaps each participant could submit a few hand tied flies to be given to the winner - or any other ideas you guys might have for a prize. I like competition, otherwise I could just enjoy viewing the sweet fishing porn.

How about a little black and white action? I know, I know, I didn't use the ol' "rule of thirds" on this photo, but I just liked it better this way.

I don't think you are going to get many pics if it means that flies have to be tied for an entry. Maybe a new NGTO decal to the winner? Maybe modify it to include a little camera or something to designate a pic contest winner?
I also don't think that the entry cuttoff time or date is very important, as long as it is enforced uniformly. If a deadline is missed, then it obviously can be submitted for the next month.

Very nice pics, guys. I am guessing that most people will have plenty of opportunity to fish this month, so I look forward to seeing more.
Cannon, I was wondering why you had not contributed to this thread, given your newfound love for photography. I don't find it believable, but I seem to recall you stating that you would rather shoot film than fish.
FM, you are right, the fly thing (or money or whatever) would be hard to coordinate and would signifcantly cut down on the number of participants. Perhaps we can recognize the winner with unique status on NGTO - a banner on the board somewhere or a slight modification to their avatar (perhaps a trophy) for the month, etc..

My question is, HOW are the photos judged. Are they going to be judged by color balance, clarity, composition, or just the size of the fish? We need to see some defined rules as to how they will be judged. I would be mighty unhappy if I had a beautifully composed photo with crisp colors, and good contrast, only to loose to some big tarpon.::ke:

Just one more example that size does matter :)

Hmm, I've never heard "only" and "big tarpon" used in the same sentence before ::ke:
It will be interesting to see how often fish porn beats out photog class :D
I think defined judging rules will suck a lot of the fun out of it, and this is supposed to be fun. Did you and I just disagree again?
Maybe we should have a ruling by poll. Let the members decide, what could be more fair?
Or maybe the 1st 5 to post a pic from the previous month could pick for the following month? That would make it less of a free for all than a poll, where everybody votes for their own pic, and would encourage more participation.
Better yet, randomly pic the committee each month from the contributors, to make it totally fair, and add a little spice too.
I also think that the monthly contest thread should be just pics, no comments, no kudos, etc. Then someone could do a randon number pull on the number of entries, each number pulled would correspond to a post with a pic, and the poster of that pic would be a judge the following month. I would happily volunteer to be the picker using a random number generator.
Maybe make it against the rules to vote for yourself?

I love the ideas so far. Now that I'm back in town I'll look more closely at things. I'd like to see if we can generate some interest this month. Keep the entries coming and we'll work the kinks out.
if you could include the equipment and any details that that would be great such as: Shot with Olympus 790 SW on "auto" or Nikon FE2 135mm lens f 3.5 @ 1/125 sec. Kodachrome 64. (I highly doubt we will see that too much any more but it sure made me feel nostalgic) That way we could all learn some new techniques. I also think it would be best to have to categories: 1. SLR and 2. Point and Shoot.

If you go back to the first post, I edited it this morning and included Medium and Large format with the SLR category.
So make sure to get out there and shoot plenty of pics. I'm dying to see the entries!!!
Another Q...
I understand the general distinction between SLR and point-n-shoot in the film world although there are some other variations (I have several film cameras of various types). In the digital world I mostly use a non-SLR, but decidely not a point-n-shoot, Olympus C5050. Fixed zoom lens but I often use screw-on supplementary lens and filter attachements (wide angle, macro, tele, polarizing, UV etc). It can be full auto but allows for many other types of shooting (shutter priority, aperature priority etc). I think SLR and P-A-S are too coarse of a distinction but I don't know what else will work.
oh, my Q...where does my equipment fall out? I don't have a typical SLR body but functionally "see" the image on the LCD screen. But so do the P-A-S-ers.
Or do I just need to get a new digital SLR body to go with my languishing and dusty K-mount lens collection??? If this is the ruling of the board, so be it, I am thinking about some new equipment anyway. ;) 12+ megapix...oh, the dream of that...
TH
IMO, a C5050 is a point & shoot.

07-09-08, 09:08 AM
Lets not overcomplicate this. I suggest something we are all familiar with, "The Honor System". If you think it is a point and Shoot, then submit it to that category. If you think it belongs with more sophisticated equipment, use that category.
Remember, this is supposed to be for fun and the images should be the focus, not the equipment.

No rules as to how many entries. We are keeping things simple to start, but you may want to narrow your entries down as a strategy. Don't want to spread out your votes too thin.
The plan is this: I will consolidate the entries into one thread and create a poll. Each member will get one vote. Most votes win.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/wlodarb/IMG_0471-1.jpg
I wish we could enter two or three and have them count collectively as one, but I think your rule makes the best sense that way you can enter 100 if you'd like, but then you just spread out your votes, and it may cause you to lose. Yikes.
Gatorbyte
07-30-08, 11:47 PM
Only one more day to get your submissions in for July and then it's time for a vote. If you want to add more entries and withdraw entries, now is the time to do it.
