Just booked the trip. Yellowstone National Park. August 10-16. A great friend of mine goes out every summer for 8 weeks. He's been going for 20 years and guides if he needs a quick buck or two. We'll be flyfishing the Soda Butte and Lamar Rivers and hiking up to Slough Creek one day. Camping at night in the Park Service Campgrounds.

I've never been and am afraid I'll never come back. Already told the girlfriend not to expect many phonecalls while I'm away.

Any suggestions as to stuff I might not think of but will be glad I brought. I've already got everything I think I need, but I'm sure I'm missing something.

How about a job application...I'm going to show this to our boss.:D

You told him your mother was ill.

Man, the things people will do for a fishing trip. I can be kept quiet for a small fee.

Heck, I'll bring you back a picture. How's that sound. And besides, my mom is sick, and I think I'm coming down with a bad cough that should worsen to full on delirium by about August 9th.

I have fisherd there many times. Terrestrials will be the ticket there as will Green Drakes if you are lucky. All Cutts in Soda Butte and some are in the 20" range. I love that place. I was there in 2003, 2004, and 2006. I heard wolves hunting in 2006 and also came upon a freshly killed elk close to icebox canyon, so be careful and take bear spray. Awesome place to fish.

would be a good idea, although I'm sure your buddy has thought of it. Last time I went, reservations for camping were necessary. Just a thought.

Don't forget to try the Madison above where the highway crosses it out by the airport and the section in the Park. The BIG browns should be coming up out of Hebgen lake about that time. Take an 8 wt and some big streamers. Autumn is my favorite time in Yellowstone. Too bad you can't go in September after the crowds have left.

If you guys see any rain at all, forget about the Lamar, any amount of rain typically blows it out for a couple of days. FF8 is right, use terrestrials - beetle patterns just kill on that river. Hit the foam. Make darn sure you carry bear spray. I once found a vest on the Lamar that had several fly boxes and a Nintendo game boy in it! Bring a camera, that's a great area for wolves. Stay in Cooke City and bring a fan for background noise - the elevation makes your ears ring when you're trying to sleep. Breakfast at the Beartooth Cafe. Drinks at the Miner's Saloon. Take pictures of Grasshopper Glacier. Did I mention I've been up there a time or two (or 20)? Have fun!
