I'm heading to St. George in a couple of weeks and am looking to do a bit of shore fishing while I'm there. Anyone ever been there/have any advice?

Appreciate any advice...

If you are staying in the Plantation, the Cut is where it's at. I caught a monster Red there two years ago. Fish on the tide change. Live bait and heavy tackle is the ticket.

On the other side of the island, there's a state park, good flats on the bay side. Google Earth is your friend. Fly Fishing: Clouser and shrimp.
Spinning, Red Fish Magic (http://www.cabelas.com/spodw-1/0036788.shtml) and spoons.

I'll be down there in a couple of weeks as well. We've been vacationing down there for about 10 yrs.

You can catch ladyfish and whiting in the surf pretty easily with shrimp.

If you are not staying in the plantation, you cannot access the cut by foot. Tide change is when the activity peaks. I paid a captain last year for the first time and caught some 30"+ redfish as well as trout, and jack crevalle.

fun place

Chuckwalla said it - There is a HUGE flat on that side in the state park. A buddy of mine and his wife caught trout and reds on almost every cast with the fly rod on a trip there this time last year.

Thanks for the advice. We aren't staying in the plantation area, but close to the state park. I guess that would be as good a place as any to try it out. Worst case, if I don't have any luck with the fish, at least I'll have some fun in the sun (that always beats being at work!)...

hit the bayside of the island and work your way back to the cut at daylight or a little before.... dont wade too deep. Make sure you take some big stuff and wire leader.... you can sight cast to some nice sharks that will work out an 8wt like you wont believe. Topwater stuff can be sick also... Although the end of the island can be a long, long, hot hike you dont have 4x4 and can get a permit.
Can also wade sandbars and do well, just watch for bait flying out of water and shoot a clouser in middle.... Used to be a good one down off the beach at Tyndall toward PCB.

Be advised that the speed limit in the Park is a serious revenue generator for the State Park!!!! :yikes::money::yikes:

The flats at the East end of the island near the State Park are primo for reds and trout, like David said. If you can get to Bob Sikes cut, you can catch pretty much anything in the Gulf, even flounder. We caught plenty of whiting, reds, and even a few (5) pompano off the beach using shrimp and sand fleas.
Tight lines!

Don't know if you're looking to spend some money, but I fish that area 2 to 3 times a year for reds and specks. I just got back yesterday from a ten day trip to st. theresa. There just weren't any around. Noone was catching, talked to a ton of people, many of which are Florida State kids who have lived and fished it their whole life. Ladyfish were everywhere but i see em as trash fish. I fish around st. theresa, alligator point, carrabelle and dog island so st. george might have some better fishing. Back to the money part...The tarpon were everywhere. One day we saw at least 10 or 11 we coulda casted to but wern't rigged for it and didn't have a push pole in the boat. If you wanted to hire a guide you could probably get into some. We hooked into some and caught a couple out on the spit off of st. theresa and mud bay off alligator point, and i heard they're in appalacheecola (don't know how to spell it) which is a short drive from st. george and has a guide service. Never used a guide so im not sure the prices or anything, but if you're willing to spend the money it could be some fun.

Best charter in Appalachicola is Boss Charters, Capt. Crosby. Last time we stayed in st george the skeeters were so bad we couldnt go out at night, even with bug spray on. curious if u have the same problem???

Oh yeah, the skeeters were horrible. I think that I left about a pint of my blood behind feeding them.
