Sun shining to 85 degrees, east wind 10-12 knots. Just a ripple on the top in the back country. Met the guide, Captain Kyle (awesome guide) around 8 and stepped into the 18 ft. dolphin skiff for a 10 minute ride at low tide to a confluence of 3 creeks. Tarpon rolling, crashing bait and laying up in the sun. Blind casted into a hole of about 8 ft. where we're seeing rolls and bubbles. Nothing within my casting distance. Polled up into the creek where we see 3 or 4 laying up. I'm too short, right on the nose or 8 ft off, until...about the 3rd fish on the second cast starts moving towards the black maribou fly and then whommmmmpp. You can feel the immense weight of the fish and she feels a sting in her lip. About 10 feet off the bow she comes up completely out of the water dancing on her tail. Huge. I'm looking up at her and what strikes me the most is the girth. This is a pig. She crashes back down and immediately comes out of the water again. The fly comes out of its first hold deep in her mouth but then sticks in the corner (yes it feels that slo mo). I've got her on the rod and can't jab that point home now. Immediately she comes out again, crashes back down and I'm looking down at that fly sitting in the water, knees shaking.

The next was about 60 and I stuck her good, too good. She did a 180 as I was strip setting her and that 50 lb leader popped like 6x and she was gone.
Great day though. Probably saw 30 fish laying up and had 15 really good shots. I spooked half of them with off-target casts. I'll dream about those two until the next time.

Tarpon on the fly is the shiznizzle.

Jerk a lip,

That was a great tale, even without adult beverages!
