View Full Version : Local Source for Used Firearms?

Hey gang,
Just wondering what local sources (gun shops, pawn stores, convenience stores :) , etc) are in the area that have a decent selection of used firearms for sale. I have been up to Cherokee Gun & Pawn in Canton several times, but wondered what other gun shops are out there that you frequent when looking for a new (used) toy?
Thanks!
OH I bet you were wanting a reputable source. None of mine cannot be trusted, will not give a bill of sale and deal strictly cash.

Yeah, I prefer to deal with folks who have a valid FFL. But I am not opposed to picking up some "street heat" if the price is right! :)
PS: your new avatar gives me the creeps!
One of my faves is Adventure Outdoors on South Cobb Dr. in Smyrna. I picked up a Sig P6 in very good shape for $329 there not too long ago.
Nick's (or what used to be Nick's but is still called Nick's) on Canton Rd. in Marietta also has a good selection and usually has some good used guns. I bought one of my girls a Beretta 85FS for a song there last year.
Generally, though, I watch the local discussion boards. Georgia Packing http://www.georgiapacking.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=23&sid=bbf3fb1c9130bbdc1a76815ba6003f31 is very active, as is the GON site http://www.georgiapacking.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=23&sid=bbf3fb1c9130bbdc1a76815ba6003f31.
And if you don't mind paying FFL fees, most of the major makers - Sig, Beretta, HK, Colt's, etc. have forums with active Buy/Sell boards.

Adventure outdoors will have gems from time to time.
If you go into the boutique in buckhead, you will not the same warm fuzzy customer service that you typically get from the fly shop next door but im sure you have been there and experienced that.
As a budding shooter, a good instructor will give you a much better improvement in performance than any gun!

Next to the Fish Hawk.
Nice merchandise, cool old ammo boxes on the wall.
Be sitting down when you look at price tags, though! :-)
I like:
Tucker Gun
David's Gun Room in Norcross
Bullseye in Lawrenceville
Franklin's in Athens
Some are a drive but they're worth it...
Island Boy... who's go-to gun is a $179 old, ugly Ruger 4" Security Six .357 Magnum I got at Bullseye... police/security trade in, lots of holster wear, but clean rifling, works great, accurate as all getout. And, it says Magnum on the side... :-)

I haven't done any wheeling and dealing in a number of years but Franklin's Sports in Athens used to have some good deals.

Just a thought - what are you looking for? Deer rifles, shotguns, self protection? AR15's?
That might help us to steer you in the right direction...

Mainly looking for quality / classic side by side double shotguns right now, but am also on the look out for a nice lever action 30/30.
PS: I too own an old Ruger Security Six policeman's revolver. Great "never fail" side arm!

Clark,
I own a Winchester Model 94 chambered for .45 Long Colt and .45 ACP. The advantage for me is it fires the same ammo as Cath's and my .45 Tauruses (should that be Tauri ??).
Any particular reason you are thinking 30-30?

Ok I'll get rid of the peep hole. Is this one better?

Chuck's would be your place then. not much under 2K if my memory serves me right.
you might find a FFL guy and look on gunbroker. I have bought there with success in the past

SxS/O/U - Tucker Gun has some nice O/U's, some very nice Turkish SxS's. They also have some nice old shotguns - corn-cobb handle pumps, Spanish SxS's, etc. I bought a 60's artisan Spanish SxS there, it's beautiful. 12ga, so it kicks like a proverbial mule, but it's pretty to look at!
[Edit:] Go down into the back room at Tucker Gun, you'll be amazed... fun place to hang out. I hear David's Gun Room is good, too - and for sticker shock, go to Chuck's in B'head.
I bought a 70's Model 94 in .30wcf there, LOVE it! Very simple, and ammo available anywhere. Not much you can't do with a good .12ga SxS and a levergun 30-30. Throw in a .22lr or two and you're set!
I bought a 5.5" pre-billboard Ruger Single Six, stainless, up at Bullseye in Lawrenceville for $239. They go new for $450+ around town... :yikes:
That, a Marlin Model 60, a few old bolt action .22lr single shots (one from 1936) and a Walther PPK/S, and I'm set for plinkers!
Yup, the old Police Security Six is Robust! It will outlive me. It has Pachmayr Presentation grips, so it's comfy, reliable, and dead-on accurate! I love it...
Good luck, and have lots of fun on your search!

Way ahead of you on that one Zac! BTW, if it is not too far a drive, Cherokee Gun & Pawn does free FFL's! I have used them twice now and they are great guys up there.

Wow, nice, I paid $25 to have my .22lr PPK/S shipped from IL to GA.
Getting a gun store to do the hassle of an FFL transfer was a major pain! Finally found one willing to do it - tried Tucker but too much hassle getting them hooked up, finally had it sent to Bullseye...
Island Boy.
p.s. - Check the old and new SxS's at Franklin in Athens, too, if you're up for a day trip. They have a nice selection of hunting rifles and shotguns.

Buck--there is a gunshop in Woodstock that might be a convenient location for you to check out. It's Pannells Firearms & Range Inc. I haven't been there yet but my s-i-law has. He says they have a used gun rack. I see on their website that they also have a 22 pistol league on Tuesday nights with monthly prizes.

Psst. Here's a tip. It's sorta like blue lining. Your best deals aren't going to come from well known places with a large selection. They'll generally know what they have, what it's worth, and can be confident that they can move the merchandise.
Try some hole in the wall pawn shops in bad neighborhoods. They can sell cheap handguns all day long, but might cut you a deal on that off brand L. C. Smith that's been gathering dust, just to get it out of inventory.
Add me to the list of Ruger Security Six .357 Magnum owners. 6" barrel, Pachmyr grips, Bianchi XP 2100 holster.

Freakland's has had a ton of problem with ATF the last couple of years. The service sucks, and there is no way my backside will ever cross the plan on that store..

Clark,
I've got a WC Scott 1887 Wildfowler 12 gauge on the market now. Original leather case, full documentation including 1 magazine article and a WC Scott book which have my actual gun photo. This was also the first gun with crystal indicators instead of hammer fired. Wood, gold inlay, barrel, and scroll work are 90%+. Case at about 85%. Both barrels are Damascus and have been Nitro Proofed. You aint going to Wally World to buy ammo though, it's 2.5" 12 guage shells but I've got a local source. Be ready to come off the wallet though. PM if interested. Also have a few other younger guns (>50 YO) you might be interested in. PM or call if interested.
For what you are looking at, you won't find in pawn shops or local stores. Yes, you might find a steal, but there is a whole separate trade market for classics and most classic collectors are extremely well informed and well $ funded. Really important is quality, a difference between 90 to 80 % grade gun can result in a $2,000 swing on value. Not just the outside, but the inside which is where a lot of down grade % comes from.
If you remember when I bought your 22 Lever Rifle, first thing I looked at was inside bore using a bore magnifier. On a classic gun, I would even go further with a bore scope for a rifle, but not on a shotgun. Less than 80% isn't worth the investIment, IMHO. You might get what you paid for it but it will not increase much in value over time.
Another must have items is every gun value book you can find from multiple sources. They all value different and no 2 give the same value.
As for using a FFL dealer to ship to, I wouldn't do it that way for classics. You need to handle the gun, inspect the gun and then decide to buy. Under no circumstance should you ship unless 2X insured and heavily packed.
Hope this helps. We can discuss at the Fling...

FYI, there is a new gun shop/outfitter in Holly springs. I haven't been in there and cannot speak for their inventory. Can't remember the name but its just south of I575 on the Holly Springs exit. Ther are also a couple of new indoor shooting ranges on old hwy 5 between sixes rd and holly springs.

Would be nice, but pre-inspection is not always possible when buying an old firearm from a non-local source. Very much like buying old classic bamboo rods, most reputable gun sellers provide a 3 to 7 day inspection period where you can return the gun if it you are not satisfied with it's condition. Bottom line here is that you have to have some level of trust with the person you are buying the gun from, plus a mutual agreement that the gun can be returned within the inspection window.
Why not widen the search pattern?
The Eastman gun show is in town the same weekend as and nearby to the Fly Fishing Show in Gwinnett. They will be at the North Atlanta Trade center.
They carry a selection of firearm collectables from reasonable to wallet-straining. I picked up a Hardy Perfect there too.
Many of the of the vedors have storefronts that you can visit.

Am I missing something, or will both be in the NATC at the same time? Wonder if we can get a multi-pass... as I'd like to attend both shows!
Should be fun, is there room for two simultaneous shows in that building?

I guess that I should clarify that I really am not actively looking for a new gun. I was just curious about where the local joints were in the event I get a hankerin to go look at used guns.
PS: however, I am in constant search mode for an affordable Winchester Model 21. BTW, not sure if the words "affordable" and "Winchester Model 21" are used often in the same sentance! :)

The FF show is at the Gwinnett Cultural Center. Eastman's is at the NATC off Oakbrook Pky. 5 miles away? There is often something else going on at the NATC and the differences in show-subject range from useful to amusing.

Underlined above as true. However reputable gun sellers usually know the value. As you stated later, affordable classic guns in G to VG condition are usually terms only associated with folks who don't know what they have (i.e., sold after death by family member).
I have a list every gun I own with values associated with it as an attachment to my will so if.....wife or family member will not get taken to the cleaners. I consider that list my death warrant cause If my wife ever sees that list prior to my death, I'll be looking at 6 feet of dirt.:yikes:

Eastman's is probably the best gun show in the area, but be aware over 40% of the vendors are not gun oriented and the gun sellers are looking for uninformed buyers.
Jack Thanks!! Dang, it looks like I don't have so far to drive after all and the two shows work well together.

If you do decide to check out Franklin's in Athens there is also small business in Jefferson called the Curry Creek Trading Post. I've heard they have a decent selection of old guns (also heard they have some old fly reels and cane rods), and they have a military discount (10% I believe). I've only been in there once. Didn't take the time to look at their guns, but I did see some old Pflueger fly reels. I think he also has a couple of Winchester rods.
Like I said, it's a small place and his prices seemed high to me, but might be worth a look if you are ever in the area.

Adventure Otdoors gets a thumb up from me. They are opening a new store with state of the art 17 lane range with computer operated target control
with a cafe or meeting room type set up for groups. I think it was an old grocery store if that gives an idea of size.
The owner is the one who went head to head with mayor Bloomfield in N.Y
and won a law suit.Needless to say a gun advocate.
