I'm spending a little time in New Jersey and I am so glad I don't live here. I would have to get rid of most of my handgun clips and pin the adjustable stock on my AR. I'm sure there are other rules I would break, but I don't want to know.
When I went through a WalMart today and looked to see their ammo prices I found they didn't even sell ammo. Not even shotgun shells. That just ain't right. :shake:

That's one place I will not fly through while hunting. Those laws are crazy. Get delayed and they make you pull your bags including a checked firearm, you could possibly get cited for possession of a firearm without a license.:hammers::hammers:

So true. We don't travel much unless on vacation but NJ i is among the handful of states I never care to set foot in (sorry Dredger!). Maybe Gov. Christie will truly make a change.

Better stay outta New Yark too. Wasn't it Mayor Bloomberg that sued Adventure Outdoors Gun Shop in Smyrna, Ga ?
Mike-- no shotgun shells at WalMart, Target won't even sell cap pistols.

When I bought a pistol this past weekend at the gun show in Norcross, I was with a friend who moved from Florida about a year ago. He was just flabbergasted that I could buy a gun, clear the background check right there, and walk out with my pistol (or even a bunch of pistols!) Florida requires a 3-day waiting period.

I remember years ago when I ventured across the Mason-Dixon line for the first time; it was the early 80's and I was in the military and traveling to my next duty station in upstate NY. On my way up, I swung into Massachussetts to pick up a buddy who was going to the same place in NY I was. When I got to his parent's house just outside of Boston, I asked his Mom if it was OK if I brought my guns inside the house for the night. She literally gasped and said "you have guns?".
My response was "of course, don't you?" Since I was moving, I had every gun I owned with me, plus enough ammo to hold off the Mass Turnpike police for a week! She then asked if I had seen the signs when crossed the state line into Mass, and I answered no. She told me that it was a state law that any unregistered gun found in your possession was a mandatory year in jail, cut and dry. And that included hunting weapons. Registering a gun with the government; can you imagine! Well, needless to say, I drove the speed limit on my way out of that state and stopped twice at every stop sign!

Thank goodness the supreme court has handed down some rulings that the 2nd amendment actually means what it says! Hopefully these idiotic laws will start falling all over the country.

Woah. Really? Crazy. Is this just the metro-area WalMarts? I buy shotgun shells and .40 cal rounds from WalMart here often.

Oh and by the way, a BB gun is also considered a firearm in NJ so the same rules as an Uzi apply.

22 rifles. Most tub fed semi-auto 22 rifles have the capacity to hold 15 or more shells....Guess what, they are banned in NJ.

All firearm retailers, including ammo sales, must be licensed, including each employee who offers for sale.

I think MariettaMike meant Wally World doesn't sell ammo in New Jersey.
What I find funny is to see firearms magazines (publications, not ammo holders) on sale in NY and NJ when you can barely own a pop gun without going through a phonebook full of red tape. I'm exaggerating but you get the drift. Yet I'd bet the publishers see some of their best revenues from those heavily restricted states - if you can't have it, then you can at least fantasize! (Think, Playboy for guns...) ;)

GA has its share of silly restrictions too. Hunting with a supressor is the norm in England and Scotland and common in a lot of countries. Hunting without one is rude and frowned upon. No can do in GA. There are a few states where they are legal to hunt with, but most of those only permit varmit hunting. Good grief, 'England' has a less restrictive gun law than GA. They were originally restricted to hamper poaching and now are held in contempt by those that fear a rash of convenience store robberies by guys sporting Barretts. Not only do they protect your hearing, they also reduce recoil. Arkansas is looking better and better, maybe something around the White River.
A few years back and after seeing brown bears up close and personal, I decided to buy a hand gun. The first thing I did was to get a Gerogia carry permit. After getting advise from people on this site and friends more knowledgeable on the subject, I purchased a .44 mag revolver.
Since then I have been trying to understand the laws in Georgia and other states on how and when I am allowed to carry. Does anyone know where there is a website that explains in layman terms what the law allows including Federal parks. Clarke

There has been some inroads on allowing supressor's for hunting.

Thank goodness the supreme court has handed down some rulings that the 2nd amendment actually means what it says! Hopefully these idiotic laws will start falling all over the country.
Even thought these rulings have been handed down recently, they really haven't done much to reassert the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms. I think I have resigned myself to the fact that sometime during my lifetime, I will probably be in violation of more than 80% of the restrictive gun laws on the books (if I'm not already at that point now).
The 1st Amendment rights seem to extend so far as to allow the press to frequently get away with statements that are slanderous or could be considered libel. It is also so broadly interpreted by the courts as to prevent any prayer from being offered or any Christian ideas from being expressed at any publicly sponsored gathering on the basis of a "separation of church and state". Of course, there is no such constitutional clause that says a bleeping thing about separation of church and state. It simply says, "Congress shall make no law. . ." So, as far as I'm concerned, congress made no law regarding that prayer before kick off at the high school football game. (Real open interpretation there, isn't it?)
Yet, when it comes to a very clearly written and easily understood second amendment, the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms is infringed to such a degree as to be a non-existent right. Even with the recent court rulings, would you dare to carry in such places as Chicago, New York City, or DC? (Not unless you're willing to risk almost certain arrest, detainment, incarceration, fines, and years and years of battles in appellate courts until there comes such a time as the Supreme Court just might decide to hear your case. And then, even should you win, how much of yourlife has been wasted? How much money has been spent - and you won't be reimbursed for it? How many years of sharing time with your family will have been lost?)
Face it. As far as this country and its government are concerned, the Second Amendment is nothing more than a bunch of words written on somefaded document that have neither place nor bearing in the real world in which our government acts. . .
I shall cease my rant at this point before i truly get worked up into an honest-to-God tirade on this issue. Just simply put, the nation in which we live, and the government which currently wields power, are not the nation and the government that our founders envisioned nor established. We are a powerful nation, but our citizens live only under the illusion of real freedom.

Guys, we're at risk of drifting way off topic. Please keep it focused on gun laws.
If you want really deep and heavily nuanced discussions on 2nd Amendment and the RTKABA, check out Highroad.org (http://www.thehighroad.org) - apparently they have patched things up over there (major legal squabble over who had rights to the name The High Road) and it's all one site again.

Well said Swamp Angel ! TRW
It could be worse.
Years ago I wanted to buy a handgun in Ontario. I plunked down around $300-400 in a gun store and walked out with a gun rug and a receipt. The next day I took the receipt to my nearest OPP station (state police) and they ran the serial number through something. A computer?? It was in the seventies. They then gave me a permit to show to the gun store allowing them to give me the gun (High Standard Victor) and me to carry it to the OPP station "on the most direct route possible". Which I did. They then re ran the actual numbers on the gun through something. It passed and I was given a permit to carry it to my home, "on the most direct route possible". I could not shoot it until I got a carry permit which was obtained by taking an 8 -10 week course (10 sessions) at a gun club and being recommended by the range officer. I finished the course and got the letter but was transferred to Calgary before I got the permit. Figuring it took all of that to get the gun home I could never get it moved out west in a timely manner, I gave it to my brother in law. He showed up with a permit the next day. He was a cop.
Interestingly, when they were running my gun through whatever they caught another guy with a stolen gun.

They have shells at the Walmart out on powder Springs Rd at the East West connector. Just bought some nightcrawlers there and walked right past them.
Walmart sells ammo in Georgia. During the shortage dealers would wait for the truck and buy what they could to sell on ebay-type gun sites. There was quite a mark up. Walmart set a limit that some stores followed and others did not.

The WalMart in NEW JERSEY doesn't sell ammo because of the GUN LAWS in NEW JERSEY.
This thread is about GUN LAWS, not about WalMart.

I agree. I just didn't want people to think that they did not sell it in GA. For a while, it was about the only place you could get it at a reasonable price.

I nominate WalMart for its own NGTO forum. :yt:
Can I get a second?
Great idea. We could discuss ammo availability or the lack thereof in it and perhaps, the varying retailing emphasis of the big box stores from state to state. Could we also discuss Home Depot and Lowes?.
Jeezers. My 300th post was about Walmart. Sad doings.
My thanks to huntfish and Marietta Mike for posting where I can find readable information on carrying in GA and other states. Just the information I was looking for. Clarke
