View Full Version : Gray squirrel dubbing
I "harvested" a gray squirrel and wonder if anyone has tried dubbing with this fur. It's buggy looking, few guard hairs, and has various shades, brown/bronze on top, gray on the sides.
It's pretty hard fur, all told.
Whitlock's Squirrel Nymph is one of the best all around flies out there. Typically tied with red fox squirrel but a gray should do well too.
Well, I tried it and it works. It's pretty spikey, and would do well in nymph patterns where the dubbing suggests legs. It's also mono-chromatic, dark and without much difference in coloration, but mixed with red squirrel would be fine.

Put it in a dubbing loop and spin a very nice s/h. Get a fur rake and use the under fur for dubbing.
There ain't no underfur on a squirrel.

I beg your pardon, but there is. I have been using pine and red squirrel dubbing for sometime. Just to be sure I didn't misspeak I just ran my LAW fur rake through the tail of a gray and there is some nice fine spiky underfur sitting on my desk as we speak. If I had an entire hide I would most likely get more.
