I went to Brigadoon on Monday and caught this beauty on a fly given to me when I took the "drag free drift" session at the Spring Fling. Put the fly on, and on the first cast got this wonderful catch. Would whoever made this fly (it looks pretty ragged now) let me know the recipe? It was a great catch!

Way to go! I saw those flies in Terry's give-aways at the seminar. It looked pretty ragged when it was brand new. I thought someone had emptied the lint trap on their clothes dryer and tied it to a hook. I guess you can't judge a fly by its flutter.
Good job on the catch and good job on the pattern.

Trudy,
I'm glad that that fly worked for you. I tied it and it is a very simple tie.
I call it a Boa Yarn Leech.
Hook: Any streamer (I believe that was a #6 or #8)
Bead: Black metal
Weight: Optional
Thread: UTC black 140D
Tail & Body: Black Boa Yarn tied on and then wrapped up the hook shank to just behind the bead. Tie off and add head cement. (Keep stroking the fibers rearward as you wrap the yarn forward to keep from trapping the fibers.)
Shown below is the yarn with a penny for size comparison.

thanks so much. It did get ragged, and think it deserves a new one!! I thought it was some sort of ostrich feather!! Will have to go to the nearest yarn shop!

I have been to every store in Cumming, finding nothing as great as your yarn. Where did you get it? The yarn I found does not have the great flash strands in it.

Trudy,
To tell you the truth, I'm not sure where I got it. But, for an educated guess, I probably got it at Big Lots. I have another skein, different color, and it has a Big Lots sticker.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

There is a bunch of it on eBay. Great array of colors tho. If you Google Boa Yarn you will find some eBay links to it---or just do a Search at eBay. I haven't checked at Hobby Lobby for it.

Trudy goes from straight from an NGTO Drag Free Drift seminar to catching pigs up at Brigadoon! Now that is what I call a rapid learning curve! :)

I saw the material used to tie this fly at Hobby Lobby in Buford. It goes by the name HAUTE FUR. You can find it in the yarn dept with the other skeins. They had about 1/2 dozen colors.

Congratulations Trudy for the big fish! If you remember we fished together at the DFD seminar. I had the chance to fish the same fly this past Saturday at Paces and it produced for me a nice rainbow...but far from being as big as the one in your picture. Thanks again Terry, Ralph for teaching us, and Chuck for the flies.

A few years back, I found similar stuff called Disco Yarn at Michaels. Long fibers with flash and neat named colors like Motown Mauve. Couldn't resist the stuff and used it for what I called Disco Buggers:

Did as well as any other bugger in fooling a variety of riverbass but for reasons I can't recall, I've gotten over it.
