I wanted to try my skills at competitive fly fishing in an event. Is it possible to register for an event without being on a team?

Yup! Anyone is free to enter, whether you are affiliated with a proffesional team or not.
Head over to TroutLegend to see what comps you may be interested in.
Good luck!

I'm in the same boat, Surveyor. Many of the events are two-man teams with "tag-outs". I wanna do the "Rumble in the Rhododendron" in Cherokee in November. Maybe we should team up..

Hey Hoochbuster - What's involved with being on a team? Are there weekly/monthly meetings? Minimum required events? Fees? Do you have to try out? I wanna get on a team (and I fish every weekend anyway)... just wondering how it works. Thanks bro!

There are two teams in Georgia...one is Team Dead Drift, and the other one is Team Trout Slayer. They both have Facebook pages and websites, check them out, they also have a "Contact Us" feature in their menus...Good luck and see you on the reever!

I can't speak exactly for Team TS but can say they run and operate a LOT like Team Dead Drift.
Each Team has "dues" these dues go to cover associated costs of liability insurance, website fees, and any other incurred administrative costs. The insurance premium defines the carrying capacity or allowed and covered membership for the group. Currently Dead Drift is at full capacity for adults with 22 anglers and has 2 spots open for youth. With a limited threshold for anglers each team looks for the best potential to add when recruiting new members when space is available. Some anglers switch teams, drop out, are voted out, yada, yada, yada. Our team is set up where each member is a stakeholder for the team and has a vote for dismissing members, and or adding new members. Another key feauture we look for in all great anglers is the ability to mesh and work within the team structure, this has been pivotal to DD imo. So in short we do not have "tryouts" but do require new members to come to events and practices so we can get a grasp of their skill set, and committment level.

Being on a team has some huge advantages over competing solo, especially at multi day events, where team mates share intel, flies, and a fresh supply of pride and pep talk when needed. Not to mention every angler has a skill set different slightly from the rest and so much can be learned by just watching and listening to how other anglers fish, or look at the water.
Practicing/fishing whatever anyone wants to call it, is really more like personal on the water seminars on how each of us approach the water and fish it differently. We have meetings/pracitices every 2nd saturday of the month at different locations both in Georgia and beyond. We do require a solid foundation of basic euro nymphing and fly fishing essential skills. This is advanced fishing at it's core and it is a crash course so to speak. We do plan to offer our clinics again as soon as weather cools and permits.

I believe the only other difference right off hand between DD and TS is that DD is a 501-c3 non-profit organization and partner with the Federation of Fly Fishers. If there is anything I have not covered please let me know and I will be glad to help out and answer.

Ben forgot to mention the biggest difference between Team Trout Slayer and Dead Drift...Team Trout Slayer consists of the best anglers and fly tying goof offs in the country. HAHAHA

I'm VP of Team Trout Slayer and we are currently open for applications to join the team. We have a dues schedule, minor minimum requirements for participation, and require a couple of pre-approval meet ups like a practice, stream cleanup, competition, etc before the team votes a potential new member on. There are a lot of really cool benefits to being on a team but it is not a requirement to compete in the tournaments. Check out our website or our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TeamTroutSlayer) for more info.

Cheers.

Nice one Marc! You may have Goof Off's but we got you beat on the Beer Drinking! Besides silly rivalries most of the teams all have a great time together and work toward the common good. Just off hand I can name several great things that have been done by both teams!

Thanks to Team TroutSlayer for a generous donation to Smithgall Woods, and a stream cleanup there.

Dead Drift volunteered and ran the Epic Game Fair Childrens Fishing center for the weekend helping some kids catch their firs fish ever!

Dead Drift also helped raise funds for the Gold Rush Chapter of Trout Unlimited thorugh it's Gold Cup Fly Fishing Competition.

Dead Drift also helped with the nymphing clinic at last years fall fling!

Several other great opportunities and ways to support the community we all love "outside" of competition are in the works. (this does not count the endless volunteer opportunities that individual members have given their time up for as well)
