So Saturday after dropping my wife off at work I stopped by the local Orvis store to pick up some tippet...mind you I usually use tippet from walmart...back to at Orvis I walked in just grabbed the sizes I need and go to the cashier...she rang it up at $21, I had to pick my jaw off the floor...she asked another salesman he said "oh the Mirage tippet, the best there is." I asked for the cheaper stuff and he said oh let me show you what this tippet can do...he shows me this picture of a guy holding up this nice rainbow and said this was caught on 7x mirage...I asked him where the fish was caught and he said the San Juan river...I told him the Hooch doesn't have anything like that and there was no fish in the hooch that warranted a spool of tippet at $10 a spool...he then started in about fishing up at Noontootla creek and using 3x mirage, again I said I'm not paying $10 a spool...

Sorry for the rant but do any of you use mirage or extremely expensive tippet...I just see no need in paying that much

I bought some of this for the first time this year. I was trying to step up my fishing so I figured line would be a good way to do that. I know that 100% fluorocarbon is spoken of highly in reviews. So I took it on a trout stream not long ago and honestly it didnt hold up well at all. Through out the day the string kept twisting up on me. I kept getting those little loops sticking out of my spool. I bet atleast 5 or 6 times with in a 3 hour period I had to pull m y line out to fix it. It was getting old fast. Now I have been using Berkly for years and have always had good luck with them. I guess what I want tpo know is, is this an isolated innocident or common with flor. Could it be the brand maybe? I dont know , so what do you guys think?

I attempted a friction disc and it didn't turn out good requiring me to make a new spool. Glad I did, I like the new one alot better! I also like how my one piece foot turned out. It required alot of hand file work! I like the looks of the solid spool and do not believe I will be porting it out any. Right now the reel weighs in at 6.15 ounces. Here are some pics of the workings and assembly.

I am very new to the sport (fly fishing) and I am looking forward to meeting and chatting with the members. I'm looking for an affordably priced vest and chest waders (with built-in boots) - under $175 for both. I know that you get what you pay for and I willing to accept that until my fishing frequency and level of interest grows. I will don't think I will be fishing much in January and February assuming that makes a difference. I will be primarily fishing the Hooch and the tail waters of the Buford dam. Bass Pros had some reasonably priced waders and vest of their own brand. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey all so I picked up a shimano sahara 1500 last year thinking it would work well for bass and trout now and then. well.... it didnt really go to well for me on the trout stream. I'm thinking about picking up a new reel. I'm not really sure what to pick up. I am def going for a shimano. I'll stay around the $100.00 mark. the thing that confuses me is the sizing. I get it has changed over the past couple of years. See at one point in time I picked up a 1000 and it seems way to small, it could of been a 750. So I just thought the 1500 would be perfect. Now they have 500, 1000, and 1500.... I think any way. So what would you guys pair up. I'm looking at an 4'6 fast action rod. I'll be running 6lb test.

I'm not finished yet but far enough along to post some pics. After posting pics of a recent build of a vice, fishinbub sent a link to a reel building site that quickly sparked my interest. Going through some drop pieces and using some large bronze thrust washers I had saved in my tool box, I came up with enough pieces to build this reel. I still need to work on the drag system, see if I can shave off a little more weight here and there, and polish everything. But what is definitely looking like a reel now.
I know some vices aren't too expensive but having a machinists background I decided to make my own. I just went for a simple design for my first but I like how it turned out and am sure I'll try and make some a little more fancy in the near future. I'll also get the size down a little more too. But for now this grips and works good with the smaller hooks:)
