  • Big Snowbird Creek

Finally got up to the DH section of Big Snowbird Creek yesterday for the first time. Beautiful place, beautiful day, and fish were cooperative. Caught browns, bows, and brookies. Best fly of the day was the wooly bugger, tried several colors and they all worked. Also, I caught fish on a pink squirmy, green weenie, and muddler minnow. I saw some fish sipping at the surface, and I tried a caddis dry fly, but no luck, maybe because I did not have a caddis small enough. Thanks to Dave375 for recommending Big Snowbird and directions on how to get there, including GPS coordinates for a specific hole. Without his directions I would have had a difficult time finding Big Snowbird. Unfortunately, the hole for which he gave me specific GPS coordinates was occupied by a guide and his clients when I got there. However, I should give a shout out to the guide, who took time to talk to me and my wife and put me on fish. His name was Daniel Boone, not sure if that was his real name, but that was the name he gave me and it was the name on his card. Believe he is with/maybe it is his company, Nantahala Fly Fishing, 828-479-8850. He was super friendly and helpful. It just so happens that I had researched the stream in preparation for my trip yesterday and found the following article in Eastern Fly Fishing January/February 2011 in which his name was mentioned: https://www.carolinaflyfishingclub.o...rd%20Creek.pdf
Here are a few pics of some of the fish I caught and of the stream:

          Steve,
It is a 3 hour drive from my house. I live near Settles Bridge.

I usually like to park at campsite 10, good fishing both up and down from there.

Is the campsite on the DH section? From the NC Wildlife map

                https://www.ncpaws.org/wrcmapbook/Fi...aspx?MapID=137

it looks like a 160 mile 3 hour drive for me from off of 75 in Atlanta inside the perimeter, about the same as Cherokee and 30 mins more than the Nantahala or the Tuck in Dillsboro.

It is. The DH has several campsites and many pullovers. Fish are scattered the entire length. Similar to upper Nantahala on the fish distribution.

Steve it's an awesome place. I have only fished it once, the wild section is a long but easy hike upstream from parking. You would love it.
