  • Looking for an old friend...

Hey folks, I read the message board nearly everyday, but in 15+ years, I have only half dozen posts...I apologize in advance for that, I'm simply not a chatty person in public forums, I became a Fly Fisherman 25 years ago to get some peace in my life. Who knows maybe that will change with this 1st post in quite some time.

As mentioned above, I've been fishing the Hooch for 10+ years, Settles Bridge is my 'go to' spot. Years ago, I met an old guy on the river, his 1st name Wes, never got his last name...Wes and I used to see each other 3-4 times a week on the River. As the world changes and we all have to work more for less, Wes was able to enjoy retirement and continue to fish the hooch, while I had to cut back on my time on the water. As some additional years passed, I'd see Wes on the water at Settles, and we'd talk about the fish we were or were not catching...all I know is, when I set out to fish Settles Bridge, I always looked forward to a conversation with Wes, and 9 out of 10 times he'd be there to converse.

Lately I've made some time to fish, and have been frequently visiting my old spots at Settles, but there has been no sighting of my ole pal Wes. Wes was older, I think he was mid-late 70's, so he may have simply decided to hang up his waders...I'm simply trying to find out if anyone out there has any info on my old friend.

Does your friend Wes wear a hat similar to the one in your profile picture?

I'm going to guess his user name was Weg. He use to fish Settles a good bit.

Man, I used to see Wes a bunch too.
In fact he tied up a bunch of popper bugs for Spencer and me that I've never gotten to properly thank him for. They slayed at the local hood pond.

As of last fall he was fishing settles regularly. And as you say, the conversation was always fun.

Maybe the three of us will end up at settles at the same time and get to chat about this crazy sport, past time.

Iím pretty sure I know him as well. Does he drive a white SUV?

There is an older retired gentleman that I see at Settles all the time. Fished with him 2 weekends ago. He was coming in as I was coming out. He gave me my first blue assasin nymph like 5 years ago.

                  The Legend lives.
Saw and fished with Wes today before the release.
                  Great time.
Shared a few flies, catches, stories...

I used to see him at the Shakerag Rock back when the authorities allowed us to fish there. The last time I saw him I think we had a discuss about being cutoff. That needs to change.

If we are thinking of the same gentleman, he wades with wading staff that looks like a 2x2 with a little shorter 2x4 connected to it. I smiled when I saw it until I went swimming when my small bamboo staff didn't hold in that pushy water at Settles. You might not have seen him at Settles because he fishes several places on the river, including the 20 bridge. I think he told me once he also takes a summer fishing trip out west with his brother.

These are all great stories, based on past experiences of Wes,,He must have made had an impact on many members here (and continues to do so)..Out of curiosity, was/is Wes a member of NGTO, and if so,are there posts from him that those of us that haven't had the privilege of meeting him that are available for us to catch up with? Certainly sounds like a great guy..
                              Tight lines!!
