  • Very windy, stupid fish

Against better judgement I decided to hit the river today. I brought my usual kit, plus a collapsible eagle claw fly rod to which I attached an ultralight spinning reel. I figured if I could not cast my dry drop rig I'd toss something on the spinning rig.

The wind was gusty but not constant so for the first hour I flyfished. Caught a ton of small browns (6-8"), a few good ones that got tossed on the stringer for the study, and still a few rainbows out there

We have enough small browns in the study and decided for the next batch we are only keeping above 10", after that we'll go to twelve and so forth. But that's what the marking on my hand is, my ruler.

After working about as much as I wanted with the fly I happened upon a deep hole and thought spinning gear...
I should've known as soon as the Eagle claw was extended fish would be jumping in the net.

    First cast

... And many, many more like it.

Aside from the wind, the weather was perfect for wet wading. In fact the water was warm 13.5 C and felt great.
    Water was crystal clear, too.

All in all, I'm really glad I got out there.
I sure hope the fishing keeps up and I also hope that everyone's family and friends are safe after the storm.

Hmmmm... a spinning reel on a fly rod...great idea. When you went with straight spinning gear what lb. test did you use? Iíve been avoiding 2 lb. test since my vision isnít what it used to be and itís hard tying knots.

It was a Wal-Mart special for spencer, so probably 6-8#
