  • First Brookie this weekend (and then some)

Yesterday I got up and headed north in search of my first brook trout. My girlfriend was working all day so me and the dog left out in search of these elusive fish. I've been trying different blue lines but striking out every time..

I decided to venture out a little further and picked a nice spot with higher elevation. I went about 10 or so miles down a FS road and only passed two people so I knew this would be a good place. I had been doing a lot of research and this area seemed promising.

I got to the end of the road and started my trek to the water. When I got there I noticed it being a lot bigger water than I was thinking it's was going to be. I started throwing a large elk hair caddis and caught several wild rainbows but no brookies... I fished upstream until I came to a large open pool and some falls that I couldn't get over... I probably could have found a way but didn't want to wrestle with a 9' rod and low hanging trees.. So feeling defeated I made my way back downstream to my truck. I checked my map again and remembered seeing a smaller Creek that I crossed on my way down the road. I decided to give that a try because I didn't want to go home without a Brookie. Within the first 2 mins I had a hit on that caddis fly and low and behold FINALLY a Brookie! I fished for about 30 mins and caught around 10 or so before I had to head back home. The beauty of these fish have to been seen in person pictures don't do them justice and I am so happy to have finally landed one. I've had a lot of firsts fishing this summer and this catch is going to be one I never forget...

      Good job!!!
They are a heck of a lot of fun to both find and catch. Now you will have to figure out how to get around that big waterfall. And you most likely find some more of those jewels above it.

Thank you all! They were all released and and will hopefully be caught again. The one that my dog was curious about was a rainbow on some of the bigger water from a separate Creek.

            Nice.

If you catch any rainbows from brookie water, keep what you can legally imho.

            They compete with the natives.
