  • DH, Squirrel hunting, Dairy queen...

Had a boys day today. Started with a brief visit to one of our favorite DH streams, that produced well, even though "the casting is tough dad"

Perhaps the highlight of the day for me was the conversation that ensued walking off the creek.

Me: "spence, thanks for fishing with me today"
Spence: "no, thank you, dad, I love fishing with you!"
Me: "I love fishing with you, too. I know when your older you might be into other things."
Spence: "um, no way. I'm always going to love fishing with you"
Me: "well, when your older your boys might want you to hang"
Spence: "then I'll be like later dudes, I'm going fishing with my dad!"
    Me: "awesome!"
Spence: "now if my girlfriend asks me... Might be a different story"

    I was dying!

After a few hours of fishing and me listening to Spencer repeat, "dad, I love fishing, but I really just can't wait to try squirrel hunting, I really can't wait to whack one..." We decided to drive a little and get into the national forest with a few pellet guns. With an eight year old trying to whisper, cracking sticks, whistling and trying to create squirrel calls, we did all hunting and zero killing, but he told me he had a blast. Right as we were walking to the truck we saw a great squirrel, it was running right in front of us. It stopped. Spencer took aim, "dad! Dad! My gun isn't working..... Ahhh the safety is on!" He proceeded to pursue on foot, and I nearly died laughing.

I'm not sure you need to be on the ground to whack a few squirrels, but I let him get into down and dirty.

And of course the perfect end to a good day in the woods: blizzards!
