No guide recommendation but would highly recommend taking the ferry to Cayo Costa and fishing the lagoons and east shore of the island. Small, uninhabited island with a handful of campsites. Beautiful and great fishing.

I don't think Scott is guiding any more, just doing the fishing school. if not, he will still recommend some local guides. Hopefully the red tide has cleared out by then.

I wasn't sure if he was either but he'll have the guide information down that way.

I fish with Captain Ren every year. You will be too early for migratory tarpon, but you should be able to target big snook in the backcountry. Ren fishes out of Choko (40 minutes south), so if you want to fish in Naples proper, he probably isn't the best choice.

Hi Guys, I'm in Georgia right now running away from the red tide in SW Florida. It got really bad in my home waters and at my house on the water. Piles of dead fish in the back yard. So I hooked up the camper and headed north.

December fishing in SW Florida can be good as long as you do not hit a cold front. I have caught tarpon on the fly on January 1st. In December we get a front about every 10 days that shuts the bite down for a day or two. The farther south you go the better. Choko and Naple are good bets. There is a fly shop in Naples (Mangrove Outfitters (239) 793-3370) that might be able to help. Kevin Merrit is a very popular guide in Naples and 10,000 islands and a fun guy to hang with (239) 289-7228. Hope it helps and good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions about this area.

                Best,
                Scott Swartz

                    Capt. Kyle Giampioli at tarpondaze.com

We went out of Goodland near marco island.

Guy works hard for you. We jumped 3 in a day and a half in early spring with a dozen other shots.
Hooked a big bull on a giant chernobyl ant that was stalking tarpon. Fight didn't last long.

                    Good luck!
