  • Online Bamboo Rod Sources

    To all,

I am beginning to compile a list of bamboo rod sources and thought I would make a sticky thread for easy reference. These are a mix of sellers of both new and classic cane rods. If you have rod sources to add to the list, please feel free to do so.

PS: most of these resources are for purchasing rods, however some also provide repair services.

Here is what I have so far in no paticular order at all (with the exception of putting our own Bill Oyster at the top of the list ):

Here's one recommended by a knowledgeable fellow I ran into at the Fishhawk -- A boo-oriented store/guide/B&B in PA called The Feathered Hook - www.thefeatheredhook.com.

                  jonmo,

Hmmm, never heard of JT bamboo rods personally. Can you provide any more info; eg. name of the builder, where they / he are located, etc? Any chance they have a website?

Thanks, that is very helpful. It is a very interesting model they have. They seem to focus on making "Banty" rods out of piece parts from old rods, but I have never been a big fan of Banty's as most of the ones I have come across are not great casting rods.

The site says that when they come across a rod that is whole, but needing refinishing work, they refurb them to like new condition and sell them as their "R" series rod. You never know with something like this, you might be able to score a very nice fly rod made from a good quality blank for a decent price. It says they can tell you who made the blanks for these rods if you ask.

One more thing, the fact that they are authorized distributors for both AJ Thramer and Rolf Baginski rods tells me that at least they know what a quality bamboo rod looks like as these are both highly respected modern builders.

Good luck and welcome to our little slice of bamboo heaven here on NGTO. If you end up buying a bamboo rod from these guys, please post pics in a new post as we would love to see what you got!

                          Steve Pennington

Have you guys heard of this maker or seen his work? Coldwater Collectables is selling a model called "Pine River". They also have a nice looking used Orvis for about the same price.

Pennington rods are made by some guy out in Iowa. I have never seen one in person, but I have heard they are well built and decent rods for the money. The Orvis that Singlemalt is selling is a nice rod, and you don't see too many Orvis rods in the 3/2 configuration. Both rods are 6 weights and would be good all purpose bamboo rods.

One thing to consider is resale value. The Pennington rod will probably never be considered a collectible and thus it's value on the used market will be nominal. On the other hand, the older Orvis rods have really retained their value with time and you will most likely be able to sell it later on for at least what you bought it for.
