Is underlining an ok thing? I have a 5 wt Orvis rod but found a 4wt line at a great price. Would it be ok to use a line 1 wt lower?

While it would be OK,as in it won't damage your rod, the lighter weight line may not load your rod to cast efficiently. Rods vary, you may not see much difference. But you may see a significant difference. What Orvis rod do you have and what line are you considering?

I have an Orvis Clearwater 7' 9" 5 wt. The line is a Courtland 4 wt.

I will defer to someone who has experience with the Clearwater series. I think bottom line will be try it and see, or buddy up with someone and try a 4wt line on your rod. Let us know how it works out.

The line works really well with the rod. It takes a bit more to load but works well.

You are right that it will take a bit more line to properly load the rod. This is good for fishing at longer distances just as many of us blue-liners overline our rods so they load with just a short bit of line out.
