  • Barbless hooks

I have been fly fishing for a long time, but just for bass and bluegill.
I notice that some of the streams are barbless hook only, is it ok if you mash the barbs down or do they have to be storebought barbless hooks ?

Don't have to be store bought. I've been told on here that if the hook point will pass into your shirt and come back out without catching your good. That's the rule I use. The night before my first trips to Dukes I probably ran 100 flies through an old shirt to make sure they were good. My Dukes box is all hooks that I pinched down with a pair of pliers that I got at Hobby Lobby.

These have flat, smooth jaws. No serrations.

Rule of thumb - test hook by running it through a cotton shirt. If it sticks on way out, keep mashing!
          Those sure are puurrtty stars
