    • OMG! We have a bona fide "Jason" comment, but typically, he is wrong as Bhuk may be the most specialist of us all.....

If it wasn't for stocker's, stocked streams, pellet fed pigs and powerbait, Georgia would not have 95% of the trout fishing opportunities that we do. Smithgall Woods / Dukes Creek is a jewel in our outdoor crown, something rare in these days, and visiting is completely voluntary just like logging on to NGTO.

I've spent some time backcountry in Citico Creek, and my observations are that Tennessee charges a lot more for the license (and additional fees for Citico/Tellico trout stamps), doesn't mark trails as well, and definitely doesn't maintain trails as well. Is this by Edward Abbey-esque design? These are some ways to keep the fisheries wild and sustainable.

For example, one of my favorite trails in Citico has seemingly drifted into casual obscurity, almost completely swallowed by the trees. Same for Big Frog, when you cross in from Cohutta, the trail maintenance plunges off a cliff - which is funny, because the Cohutta trails in GA aren't marked all that well, but you appreciate it a lot more when you hike into TN. Citico has some wondeful wild trout opportunities, but you have to pack in a lot of effort to get to them.

I have lived in a lot of states - some with vast financial resources and huge natural trout fisheries - and the GA DNR punches above its weight class, all things considered.

This analysis requires a metric - something like 'dollars per available trout experience'. Would require assessing potential natural trout fisheries (where would trout live with no human influence at all) in miles, managed trout fisheries (Smithgall / Dukes) in miles, unmanaged (blue lines and other wild places) trout fisheries in miles, grading these areas for something like ease of access, then seasonal availability, number of trout per mile... and if you weighted the profiles of all of these things into a distribution, you could get a sense of the variability of experience per dollars spent that states maintained, and how they'd grade out against each other. You'd want distributions suggesting highly variable trout experience for low dollars... think rank/power profile with scarce few Smithgalls and crap-tons of miles of wild blue lines... but if the slope or shape was 'wrong', you'd be able to see an imbalance towards mediated experiences... interesting. I might fiddle around with that when I have some time.

I don't fish Smithgall out of my own preferences, but I don't have an issue with it, either. I guess my concern is that if the state didn't create a mediated experience like that, on a long enough timeline, would land uphill be sold to some commercial blowhard from ATL who wants to sock in a Hartsfield-sized Jungle mini-golf? I truly don't know the issues at play - but I keep receiving "LAKEFRONT PROPERTY ONE DAY ONYL LOL" auction scams, so there's something fishy in them thar hills.

Fascinating discussion - I would love to have a clear set of things to advocate for.

Did Dylar ever answer mudruns question?

Lots of things that aren't beneficial have large constituencies.
Enlighten us. What else does the state have to do to protect a wild fishery other than control erosion, shade, and access?

Actually no, this is what I said to your name calling of Dylar:

"Does that not make you the same as him?
