Ask any corporate executive today what is the most important thing to the company? They will respond "Share Holder Value" which translates to stock price. Easiest way to do this is keeping large amounts of cash in hand driving up the speculative value so corporate and individual share holders see more $$$ on paper. This is where the biggest hole exists in their highway paved with gold because at some point the company has to invest in the business or go belly up. If multiple large corporations blow out at the same time the last recession will look mild in comparison. Another reflection of the very short view of today's CFOs.
John you are partly correct. What happens if Big Blue misses a dividend prediction? Right.

It's all about returning shareholder value in the form of dividends as well as maintaining a high stock price. Dividends are the better predictor of a company's health. If a company is making money and giving earnings to investors, then the management of that company is doing something right. So long as the earnings come from growth and margin management and not in the form of continual cost cutting; that bone is only so deep.

Earthquakes, ice storms, and just edginess in general. I'm sliding the risk bar to the left. Plus I've no clue on predicting what the CEO's will do. Now is this the best group for advising on women?

I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that "old soldiers never die; they just fade away."
And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty.

So follow suggestions to a T and I can't go wrong. Slightly loaded statement is my bet.

Well I hate to admit it but I have figured out the stock market, I'm going to write a book. I use the William O'Neil approach. I subscribe to IBD and they toss it in the driveway every business day and Saturday. There is no emotion involved. I only trade 2-3 stocks at a time. I used to trade 20+ stocks. I couldn't keep up with it. The stocks I currently hold could be Home Depot, Walmart, Nokia type stocks. If I park money in a Mutual Fund it is always in a fund where the manager of the fund has over a million dollars of personal investment.

                  Trout8MyFly - Dead On.

You are dead on about the dividend structure as well as stock price. You are also quite correct when you speak to where those earnings numbers come from. At some point you cut muscle instead of just the fat and then you begin a long decline. Happened to AT&T in the 1990s when they did massive cuts to the senior crafts people. These were the people who actually knew how the network functioned and how to fix it when it broke. This almost brought AT&T to its knees.

                        Just wait a minute...

And now the market has rebounded:

That said, as I enter my 60th trip around the sun, I really do need to look at a more conservative portfolio.
