  • 2013 Fall Fling Schedule of Events: Sat. Nov. 2nd

    From the President's desk....

    Hey gang,

Well, November 2nd is just around the corner and that means it is almost Fall Fling time! We are expecting another great event this year and have a bunch of neat things for folks to come out to the hatchery for. Here is our tentative schedule of events (subject to change of course!):

    Schedule of Events

8:00 AM to ??? - Drag Free Drift Training with Fishbreath (Landon):
Fishbreath (Landon) has stepped up again to lead the Drag Free Drift on-stream class at this years Fling. If new fly fishers are to learn one technique that will improve their ability to catch fish it would be "How to Make a Drag Free Drift". Landon is going to be conducting an on-stream class showing you how to accomplish this skill. Helping Landon will be several "Famous" NGTO Mentors that will work with the students. Landon will certainly be looking for additional volunteers to help his teach this class, so please consider helping him with this great training event. You do not have to be a pro to help out just a want to help your fellow fisherman. More details and sign up to follow.

Seminars: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Introduction to Fly Tying by Steve Hudson- In this workshop, Steve will focus on learning basic techniques that you can then use as you go further into fly tying (but be warned that there is no turning back!) This will get you off on the right foot and will give you skills that you can use to launch yourself into something you'll enjoy for years to come. Along the way we'll tie up several flies that you'll be able to use right away, with special attention to flies that you can use during the delayed harvest season.

Everything is provided, even tying tools if you don't have your own. Please indicate if you need tools to use during the class.

And remember to bring an empty fly box. This class will get you off to a good start toward filling it up!

In order to sign up, go to this Thread: Intro to Fly Tying

Delayed Harvest Fishing- Our own JeffG will conduct a clinic on fishing the DH streams. Jeff is a fantastic fisherman and this will be a seminar that you will not want to miss.

Lunch!- The finest pulled pork you'll ever eat, provided by Gold Star Barbecue. (Donations accepted to defray the cost of lunch). And of course with 250 to 300 folks to feed, we welcome all the side dishes that you can bring! (Don't plan on feeding the entire crew...)

The Famous Fall Fling Auction and Raffle- Throughout the day you'll see the cool products and services that our sponsors and generous members have donated to raise money for trout fishing in Georgia. Shortly after lunch we'll pull the raffle tickets and close any silents auctions. Bring a checkbook because we don't take American Express. Or Visa. Or MasterCard. Or Diners Club. Or...you get the drift.

    Directions to the Buford Hatchery

The Buford trout hatchery is located in Forsyth County on the banks of the Chattahoochee River just downstream of Lake Lanier and Buford Dam.

Directions from Interstate 85/985: Travel west on GA Highway 20. After you cross the Chattahoochee River you will turn right onto River Club Dr. (you will be entering a subdivision - look for the DNR hatchery sign). Travel approximately 1/2 mile on River Club Dr., turn right onto Trout Place Road (at the second hatchery sign). The hatchery is through the gate at the end of the road.

Directions from GA 400: Travel east on GA Highway 20 for approximately 4 1/2 miles, turn left onto River Club Dr. (into the subdivision) and follow the directions above.

Enter the following address in Google Maps for turn by turn directions from your house (or click here for the Google map link): 3204 Trout Place Rd., Cumming GA 30041

Miscellaneous Info:
    Parking at the Hatchery
: For safety / emergency response reasons, we cannot park vehicles on both sides of the road leading into the hatchery. We will have parking volunteers to help you find parking inside the hatchery grounds.

    Chairs:

Please bring something to sit on! Tables and chairs will be available, but there are never enough chairs for everyone to be able to sit and eat lunch. To ensure you have a comfy place to rest your bum, please bring along your own portable chairs.

Weather: November in Georgia can have just about any type weather you can imagine short of a blizzard. It might be sunny and 70 or cold as the dickens. Watch the weather closely before the Fling and dress accordingly. This is a rain or shine event, so please pray for a nice sunny day!

Kids? - Yes please bring them! NGTO loves kids and this event is a great way to expose them to trout fishing. The hatchery is a fascinating place and you and your kids can tour the grounds and even feed some trout chow to a few thousand hungry fish!

Look at it... a young trophy wife, in the parlance of our times, you know, and she, uh, uh, owes money all over town, including to known pornographers, and that's cool... that's, that's cool, I'm, I'm saying, she needs money, man. And of course they're going to say that they didn't get it, because... she wants more, man! She's got to feed the monkey, I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?"- The Big Lebowski 1998

Randy Vining is one of the designers of the Old Town Predator and he will have it on hand and is going to demonstrate how to set up a yak including how to properly transport to and from the water. Here's a chance to learn from one of the pros.

Casting demo and Instruction by Kent Edmonds: Here's an opportunity to learn from one of the Best. I've had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Kent over the past several years, and there isn't a finer teacher around. Kent is FFF CCI and has knack for connecting with students and explaining things in a way that make sense. some of the casts he will cover:
      - double haul - learn it in 15 minutes...
      - what they never told you about the fly cast (1 simple secret to make it all better)
      - curves, hooks & piles

The Fly design Challenge: Mog is heading up our first Fly design Contest: Check here for details. Bring your own vise and tools.

Other events include Tying Demonstrations and Contests. There may even be a Demo by Rscott on how to set up a nymphing rig including those pesky Sighters.

RScott and 2Fly are going to demo tight line Nymphing rigs after the Drag Free Drift. They'll show knots and connections and sighters. This will be at the Hatchery with the other demos along side the tying demos. No PFD required.
