Nice-looking scarf joint!

Are you building a McKenzie driftboat?

troutbum69 08-19-16 11:25 AM

Yep, a Baker 17 x 54

Getting 17 feet out of two sheets of plywood is tricky, its a wonder why the first boats were 16 feet at the gunnel

If I'm not mistaken....Doug fir plywood could be manufactured in 16-foot lengths once upon a time. My boat is scarfed with two 8-foot sheets and as a result....is a hair over 15 feet.

Please keep us posted. I enjoy seeing your progress.

Yep, they used to have 4 x 16 doug fir. With a 12:1 scarf on 1/4 inch ply that means your scarf overlaps by 3 inches. So when you scarf two sheets together you really end up with 15' 8". But this boat is going to be 17 feet. Apparently when you stretch a 16 48 boat proportionally it becomes a 17 54. Thats why most wood boat plans now come in either 16 48 or 17 54

People freak out about how to cut the scarf at first, myself included. However it's pretty easy
Set your plane to serious material removing depth

And shuck away

Once you get close, set it to barely remove any wood and touch it up. Once you're almost to the line hit it with a sander

Last scarf for a while. Finally got pretty decent at it.
