Default Noob question #2 - Strike indicator

I know it will vary based on conditions, but generally how far above the first wet fly do you put your strike indicator when you are running a double rig, say for the Hooch DH?

Thanks again for all the great advice that "the books" don't give!

Generally the indicator would be twice the depth of the run you're fishing. 3 ft of water would put the indicator at about 6 ft up the leader.

1.5 to 2 x the depth of the water that I'm fishing is a general rule of thumb that I use. But if the indicator is happily bobbing along without ticking the bottom or getting hung up then you will need to move it further up. The speed that the water is moving also dictates how far up and how much weight you will need to keep it down in the water column, te faster it is the more you'll need it up. Also, if you throw a couple of mends in your line it will help get the fly down too.

Right now with the colder weather the fish really are hunkering down to the bottom and if you are not getting it there your catch numbers will be much lower. Last week I was fishing with my indicator all the way up to my fly line and I still wasn't getting it deep enough, took the indicator off and added a fourth bb and then just started wearing them out.

I concur what GoneFishn and Baldea stated on indicator placement.

I also have done away with the indicator lately and added extra weight to get nymphs into the zone and keep them there longer. Usually with a indicator on it will want to pull the flies along with it.
