Headed up to Smith this morning and got there by about 9. Several cars in the lot already. I walked downstream and started working any hole that looked good but had no luck. Tried almost everything in the box, but didn't change the weight on the line at all...Around noon I was frustrated, still empty handed, and I thought to myself it's days like this that produce that one big fish.....I saw a good hole, saw a fish working a spot and cast a 10 olive WB w/BH PT dropper....no luck. Finally got smart and decided to put more weight on and first upstream cast I hooked up and pulled this one out, came in at 15" or so, probably my biggest brown.
![]() Headed upstream and caught one more, ran into Ed and he handed me some smaller split shots, that allowed me to adjust depth and dial in a bit better, still struggled to catch fish. Wound up w/2, but did get a lesson from dredger up by the dam on high sticking. Although I didn't have much luck, I finally learned to adjust weight at every hole until you hit the right depth, I was fishing over their heads all morning. Didn't catch anything at the dam, which is likely a new record for fishing futility, but applied dredger and Ed's principles and after an hour found the right depth and got several good bites, a couple that yanked the line out of my hand, but they got off. Overall, a good day, I learned more today than I have in past year or more. Thanks dredger and Ed! |

Great brown! Your patience paid off, and getting rewarded for a technique as your learning it helps the idea stay in your memory. Congrats.

Hey Dave great to meet you. Thats a nice fish. Glad to see Dregder hooked you up.
You all should have seen the split shot he had on his line when i saw him just after catching that fish. It looked like a musket ball or a breaker marble. It did the job though. We will have to hook up on the hooch when it clears up.I ended up catching about 15 or so fish. After i saw you i went all the way to the park border and climbed down that steep hill to some deep holes. Pulled a bunch out of them. Almost killed myself going down those dry leaves in my felt soles. Anyhow, i had a good day, caught some nice fish but none like the one you got! Ed |
