Default What Really Matters

My heart is heavy tonight guys. I just got back from Florida where I spent the weekend with a good friend of mine who is dying of cancer. He is a long time friend from my Navy days who has been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. He went from a strapping man in the prime of his life to not being able to do anything without assistance in the span of about 8 weeks. It broke my heart to see him like this; cancer is such an aweful thing for anyone to go through. I share this story with you all tonight for a few reasons. The first is to ask those of you who believe in a higher power to pray for my friend Seth. I believe that God still does miracles everyday, and am praying for one here. Pray also that God grants him and his family a peace that passes all understanding during the difficult days that lay ahead for them.

Secondly, I share the news of my friend's situation in hopes that it might cause us all to pause for a moment to consider what really is important. Our lives are so consumed these days with the pressures of work, school, seemlingly endless committments, even trying to find time to go fishing!. With this constant bombardment on our time and senses, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters most. Love of family, the companionship of good friends, concern for the well being of others; these are hallmarks of a life well lived. Every now and then it is good to call "time out" and remind ourselves of what really matters. The coming of Spring and the opening of another season of trout fishing in north Georgia always fill my heart with hope. And hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.

Love you guys!

Thank you for posting this, and for being such a good friend in this time. We need to be continually mindful of both eternity and that life here is about relationships. Have prayed for your friend and his family.

Prayers sent on behalf of Seth, and on your behalf as well, Mr. Rodgers. It's written in scripture that ". . .the prayer of a righteous man availeth much. . ." and I believe there just might be a righteous man somewhere amongst this group of trout hunters here on NGTO that will join in your prayer request.

Buck reading your tribute to your friendship brings me to tears. You hold in the highest of regard your relationship with your friend and your telling us of your journey with him is a needed reminder to us of the order of things in our lives. Christ taught that relationships are sourced in the heart of God. Your friendship is evidence of that truth. Our prayers have begun for your friend and his battle with cancer.

Buck,
My prayers go out to you and your friend.
I have a similar situation, in that a friend of mine, whom I have know since grade school is suffering from brain cancer. When diagnosed about a year ago, he was told that he had about 1 to 2 years before the disease took him away. Dale is a retired minister, lives in the Pacific Northwest, and through his blog, I am able to keep up to date on his condition. His mental strength, courage, optimism and his faith in God during this time is amazing.
He and all others suffering from this terrible disease will continue to be in my prayers.

Well said. Friendship, family, and human relationships must be sacred to our lives. My prayers are added as well.
