Default catawba/catalpa trees & worms ??

I grew up picking catawba worms off their trees and drowning them for bream bait. We'd turn them inside out on a #6 Aberdeen hook.

Do catawba / catalpa trees grow up near trout waters and if so, do the worms or their moths (catalpa sphinx moth) make good trout bait. Further, have any of you ever tied a fly to imitate one?

Tight Lines!

Jimmy,

This 3-pager goes back to 2005.

Being a Son-of-the-South in good standing, I have a soft spot in my bait bucket for those little darlings.

Here is a catalpa pattern I tied and posted last year. I know this pattern has more spines than the real thing but it has worked good for me.

And yes there are places where they are heavy along the Hooch if you know where to look. And that is where I was throwing the above pattern with success.

I don't know if they occur naturally on many trout streams, but the trout sure like em! I caught my first slam on a catalpa worm, and yes that's singular. Those little boogers stay on a hook infinitely longer than a night crawler...

That is a killer Catalpa tie Todd. I see the recipe does not have any lead wire. Have you fished it with weight integrate into the tie ? Just curious to see if it has worked better for you weighted or unweighted.

Again thanks for sharing the great pattern.
