I heard through the grapevine the other day - and then through MidCurrent.com today (http://www.midcurrent.com/news/2008/...r-loses-j.html) - that Phil Monahan, editor of American Angler, was the casualty of our now all-too-often string of lay-offs.
While I can definitely feel for Phil - it's a bad time right now, and no time is a good one to lose one's job - Steve Walburn, former editor of Salt Water Fly Fishing is taking over at American Angler. For any of you who read SWFF, you know that when Steve took over, the mag went from good to great. He's an unbelievable writer, an even better editor and has a great eye for photography and art. This should mean a stronger American Angler, which is cool for all of us who already subscribe. |

This is a shame. I don't know much about the fly-fishing publishing world, and I don't really read paper mags, but I thought Phil did a great job and had a great life story. Of all the interviews on Zach's site, his was my favorite by far--articulate and personable.
I'm part of the problem for the paper magazine industry--I rarely buy them--but I'm a major consumor of other printed material. IMO, you can't have too many good writers around. All the best to Phil. G |

The rapid assimilation of the "consumer internet" has led to a lot of changes in the more traditional print media for all the obvious reasons, and the cost of mailing has jumped to ridiculous levels - - a 1st class stamp is 43 cents? Our TU chapter has gone to an electronic only newsletter, but we do offer to print and mail a copy to those who request it. The only question I have for a great deal of internet based information is attribution. Blogs and so forth are fine, but without attribution most internet info - like the internet urban myths - are an undecipherable blend of opinion, fiction and the occasional fact. Not unlike we do here.
As for myself, I like the immediacy of internet news and publication, but I still have several subscriptions to traditional magazines and I enjoy the solice to just sit and read. And I refuse to take my lap top into the throne room anyway ............... |

I am optimistic about the change at American Angler, David. I subscribed to many mags a few years ago, but winnowed the list down to just that one and TU's Trout in the past two years.
