Hey Folks,
I am going on a trip to the Savannah area in two weeks. I am not too familiar to the area, so I am in need of a little guidance and direction. Where can I fish an intercoastal water way from shore in the Savannah area? About 8 weeks ago, I ran into my first ever run of speckled sea trout around Cape Canaveral!! What an experience. I am addicted now to salty ICW fishing . Any shot at finding another trout run in that area (savannah)? Thanks for any help yall can provide. |

Take the hwy to Tybee Island. There are spots along the way that you can fish. When I was there striped bass were the thing. I took my three sons, rented a boat and fished out off the coast of Tybee at the lighthouse. We caught many black tip sharks, bonnett head sharks and a stingray that I swear was the side of a volkswagon beetle. It was a ton of fun because we were specifically fishing for sharks. The Ga coast is a major breeding ground for many species of sharks. Google fishing shops in Savannah and they will tell you what is hot and where to go.

Choices for fishing from shore on an ICW in the area are not great, because of private property restrictions and marshes preventing access, however there are a few options. IMO, the best being Fort Pulaski (requires a $5/car) entry fee, but it's beautiful and there are areas that you can get on the Savannah River without being confined to a pier or bridge. A map of the park is available at the check in center and these area's are defined fairly well. After 5pm, you can also fish off the bridge there and the trout bite has been decent in the last couple weeks. Another spot is on the 'backriver' area on tybee island. Take Butler ave all the way to the end, stay right and park at either inlet ave or fishermans walk. Can't say you'll have much luck in the trout department there, but it's a great place to post up with the family and do some fishing and drinking. Without a boat, I would say you might have the best bet of getting into some trout from either the Thunderbolt or lazeretto piers, both of which are off 80 towards Tybee. Coming from Savannah, make your first left before the wilmington river to get to the Thunderbolt pier and for Lazeretto make your first right after fort pulaski.

Thanks for the great leads guys! From the sounds of it, I think I will try Ft. Pulaski first, then work my way around.
I have only fished for sea trout on one occasion (Atlantic side of FL), and most of the locals there swear by a bright green tailed grub with a jig head...it worked wonders for me there. Is it the same story around Tybee/Savannah coast? What seems to be the most consistant lure? I would hate to use frozen shrimp just to be robbed by pinfish over and over!!! |

The Gulp baits (the green grub-esq jig) you described work well--I like them in chartruesse or white, however live shrimp seem to be the ticket for most folks. A pint is about $10 and that will last you a pretty good amount of time, especially if you aint catching nothing. Hook them at a mid body joint making sure not to hit the blood line or they will die right away.

This is all good stuff. Lazereto Creek on the way to tybee fishes pretty good as well.
Be careful fishing the main river side of Pulaski, if a giant shipping boat passes by there can be enormous wake that smashes the rocks. |

I just got back from my fishing trip to Tybee area. It turned out to only be about 6 hours of fishing, but it was a good time.
I started out by the light house jettys, and nothing. Went to Lazeretto Creek pier, and nothing. Tried Fort Pulaski, and nothing...The water is just so big there, and was quite murky. I then found my little honey hole in an inland marshy creek that winds back by the UGA 4-H camp. The tide was just starting to come back in, and I started slaying fish with mud minnows. I caught 2 big flounder, 1 trout, and a redfish. Slaying is a loose term, but it felt like "slaying" to me since I spend the previous 3 hours staring at my line in the water. All in all, a great experience. I will be going back, but next time, I will hire a inshore charter guide for better luck, and more coverage. Thanks again for all the tips on places to go. |
