Default South Holston

Hey fellas - I'm thinking about hitting up the South Holston in a two weeks. What's the word... Anyone been up there lately?

We were there on Sat. The river was nice with plenty of sulphurs coming off.
Long light leaders and a bit of luck. Check with the outfittters before you head out to make sure you have the right flies.
Good Luck!!

Mike

Default Been there

I went for a few days July 5-8. Sulphers were coming off around 10 am and continuing through high water. We waded and went downstream after the generators ran us off the river.

Long leaders will help in the flat water, but in the riffles, it won't make a difference.

Size 18 emergers, cripples and duns - try them all.

If I had to do it again, I'd find a way to float the river and work the river that way, the fish (from what I hear) will take a fly easier during high water.

I wish I could go with you....

I think you were fishing just above me for a while before the rain came. I headed downstream in the afternoon but didn't do as good down there. Puff Diddy was working somewhat in size 18

That is cool. Wish we could have shook hands while I was there. We headed downstream a little bit and then decided to call it a day. Next time I will be armed with every type and size of sulpher there is...LOL
I REALLY want to fish it at night with rats...seems like that would be a blast.

Yeah, I was talking to a couple of fellas under the bridge while we were waiting for the rain to end. The fishing is pretty much elbow to elbow up there but you really don't have to move around much on that river. They seem to like size 18 Puff Diddy's right now. I just tie an easy F-fly instead. Just make a cdc wing and some dubbing. No tail or anything. I use Sulphur orange Superfine dubbing for the sulphurs after June. In the spring I use more of a yellow dubbing. There's two different species and they really key in on the color. Sizing can be picky also. Err on the small side. I'm no expert but I have fished the river a few times in the last decade.

On another note, did you encounter any temperature problems on Raven Fork when you were there.

See ya!

Sounds like we were close. Dalton and I walked up under the bridge when the rain hit. So you were one of the three guys there....That is funny.

As for Raven Fork...no temp problems at all the water was good and we were really careful to revive the fish and let them swim off on their own.

Yeah, I was talking to a guy smoking a cigar and a younger fellow who knew him. I think I mentioned that the sky was clearing when I spoke to you. Anyway, thanks for the info on Raven. I fished it a a few times before they changed the fee and before it got real popular. Might have to take off a weekday to do it again.

Have a good one,
