Default Kids got game

Thanks to some encouragement from 3-wt and dredger, Spencer and I decided to hit a high elevation small stream yesterday. Water was still a little swift because of the rain, but also fishable. And the fish were super duper cooperative. Second cast and Spencer landed a rainbow, first of 8

Mostly on the dry, which meant after a quick stop at the local fly shop we ere headed home for him to try and tie his first dry fly

"Dad, it's so easy. You just tie the feather on them twist it around the hook, duh!"
Wth.

Wow! The young-un got himself a limit and tied his first fly (which, incidentally looks a whole lot better than the first fly I tied when I was in my forties. This post gives me a happy!

You're definitely a good dad.

Thanks. That's far from his first fly. First dry though.

That trip out west got him to go for the big boys only haha. Great stuff Steve and I'm sure it'll catch plenty of trout, until the browns rip it to pieces like they do to all of mine lol

Nice..I'm guessing you were both grinning ear to ear when he finished up that fly..Now of course neither of you can wait for him to get it wet..

Man, he really has got the streamer bug... I think it's easier to tie them because of the bigger bodies and a wooly bugger could be tied by a half drunk 1 armed troll, so he can make something that looks fishable.

But, unquestionably the best part happened yesterday, after a stint at the pool we are sitting at our side-by-side tying stations in what my GF calls (and created) "The Fly Room" (two tying stations and rods hung on the wall with mounted pictures of our catches), "Dad, I really, like for real, like tying flies with you... even though I'm better, you are getting pretty good!"

He went on to tell me that "Your flies are just too small... Size matters dad, it really does!"

That's some combo of some serious father-son s**t with a little animal house mixed in or something.... He's a trip.

Hilarious.

Glad the water had receded enough for you and the little man to catch some wild trout. Nice report.
