I use "Hot Sauce" it comes highly recommended by the folks on the fiberglass fly rod forum. Not cheap but it works very well. I have both the oil and grease.

Default lube

I always used vasalene. Up... thats what we used in the 70's. Didn't have no fancy named grease.

I switched to Pro-gold gun lubricant about 10 years ago and haven't used anything since. Performs winter to summer and stays where it belongs.

good info to know on the wd40. I had a squeeky reel last week and the guys at the holston fly shop didn't carry any oil, so they advised me to pull out my dip stick and use that as an applicator. It worked, but i might need to try some of this stuff you all are talking about.

Default Battenkill Bar Stock

Great advice in here. On a related note, would the same recommendations apply to the Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock reel?

I'm not sure if it is based on the same design as the original Battenkill.

What is the best method for lubing the BBS?

Thanks.

Same thing. Lightly grease the mesh area of the 2 gears in there and give it a spin. Dab a bit on the shaft including the slot at the pointed end. Don't overdo it--a small dab.

I still have an ample supply of Lubriplate, and use it on all of my reels. Any of the oils made specifically for reels, such as level wind reels, will do the trick.

Cheers!
Yep, it does a good job of absorbing moisture. Which is why you should never, ever spray a padlock with it. Especially if that padlock is exposed to the elements, controlling access to a hunting tract you could possibly want to get to in below freezing weather.

Lightbulb Reel Lube

A couple of drops of mineral oil work well.
