Question Question about license for fishing in GSMNP

I was looking at the GSMNP web site and it said that a valid Tenn or NC license was needed to fish any where in the park. My question is this, if since I'm a resident of GA if I get a nonresident NC license will my son who's 15 have to have a license of any kind? Tenn requires anyone over 13 to have a license but NC doesn't require them until 16.

The parks web site says this;
"Persons under 16 in North Carolina and under 13 in Tennessee are entitled to the adult daily bag and possession limits and are subject to all other regulations."

So does this mean I could legally fish anywhere in the park with a nonresident license but my 15 year old son could only fish on streams located within NC borders but would not be legal on streams within TN without a TN license even in the park?

I would venture to say that yes, he'll need a license in order to fish the Tennessee waters of the park. However, you might jes' check an' see whether it's possible fer him to purchase a NC license in spite of not needing it due to his age. If it's possible to git him the NC license, you can save a little chunk of money. Tennessee is mahty "proud" of their fishin' licenses!

Please don't take this to mean that I endorse defrauding a state entity of funding that is rahtfully theirs; but if Tennessee was hoping to become established as a destination fer fishermen, you'd think they'd study a tad bit on the law of "supply and demand" and adjust their prices accordingly.

Ain't that the truth I live less than five miles from Tenn and and never fish there because they are so "proud" of their licenses.

If I remember right the common tradition in cases like that is to either go with the lower age (or number if talking about things like keeping fish) when there are two set of rules. I would recommend buying a nc license, it is good in all of the part (even the tn side) and is a ton cheaper. (a year license in nc is about the same or less then a week long in tn if I remember right) As well you won't need a trout stamp for fishing the park either. (though for the extra ten bucks I would say get one in case you want to fish other rivers in nc)

If I have read the regs correctly in the past, you as the adult will govern what the young person can do. So if you have a NC lic then that is how it would be regulated. If in doubt call or email the Park.
